The U.S. Navy, in collaboration with the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) and Project Overmatch, is advancing its capabilities by integrating unmanned and autonomous platforms to enhance Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA). In mid-2023, DIU partnered with the Naval Information Warfare Systems Command, Pacific (NIWC PAC) to seek commercial solutions for building a Common Operational Database (COD) capable of supporting unmanned systems in disconnected, denied, intermittent, and limited bandwidth (DDIL) environments. This initiative aims to overcome technical challenges with edge computing to enable unified analysis and high-fidelity information processing directly within forward-deployed devices, ultimately advancing mission autonomy for NIWC PAC’s Project Overmatch goals. In January 2024, three vendors—Ditto, Syntiant, and HarperDB—were awarded prototype agreements for their innovative solutions that enhance COD's capabilities. These solutions have been successfully demonstrated through multiple test and evaluation exercises, showcasing their ability to operate in low SWAP (size, weight, and power) conditions, maintain data integrity in communications-denied environments, and integrate seamlessly with existing Fleet C2 systems. According to a press release published by BAE Systems on November 25, 2024, a team of engineers in Portsmouth has achieved a landmark breakthrough in underwater defense technology, successfully demonstrating the UK's first autonomous extra-large submarine. The trials, conducted off the south coast of England, showcased a revolutionary vessel named Herne, developed by BAE Systems to address critical military needs beneath the waves. Herne, classified as an Extra Large Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (XLAUV), represents an advancement in naval capability. Designed to operate without human crews, the submarine is engineered to enhance maritime security by protecting underwater infrastructure, supporting anti-submarine warfare, and enabling discreet surveillance missions over vast underwater expanses. This cutting-edge platform delivers unparalleled operational flexibility, capable of adapting to diverse and evolving mission requirements. The recent trials tested Herne's ability to execute a pre-programmed intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance mission. Powered by BAE Systems' Nautomate control system, the submarine demonstrated seamless operation in a fully autonomous mode. Nautomate, a platform-agnostic control solution, enhances military operational capabilities by allowing autonomous systems to perform tasks with greater endurance and persistence. This technology reduces reliance on human operators, freeing skilled personnel for roles where their expertise is most valuable, while also minimizing risks in challenging or hazardous environments. Herne's autonomy extends its operational range significantly compared to traditional crewed submarines. By eliminating the need for life support systems and resupply, the submarine can sustain patrols for extended durations, increasing its effectiveness in maintaining sub-surface vigilance. Its open-architecture design further allows for upgrades through mission-specific plug-ins, ensuring compatibility with new technologies and evolving operational needs. The development of Herne was expedited through a collaboration between BAE Systems and the Canadian company Cellula Robotics. Raytheon UK, Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) and Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) have successfully tested Raytheon's High-Energy Laser Weapon System (HELWS) integrated onto a British Army combat vehicle, the first test of its kind in the UK. This ground-breaking test, conducted at Dstl's range in Porton Down, saw the laser weapon fired at full power whilst integrated onto a British Army Wolfhound armoured vehicle. The lightweight, portable HELWS is the first laser weapon integrated on a land vehicle to be fired in the UK. This variant of the HELWS has been designed to defeat NATO class 1 drones whilst being easily compatible within existing air defence systems, including radar, command and control and other platforms. "We have proven that the Raytheon high energy laser weapon system can track and engage targets whilst mounted on a vehicle," said James Gray, chief executive and managing director of Raytheon UK.
