For those folk who are committed to learning te reo Māori but have a challenge with the unique sound of the 'ng' in the language and the crossover from English syllabification to the Māori syllable structure, here's a couple of simple thoughts to assist that energy. All syllables in Māori end in a vowel, English syllables tend to end in consonants so English speakers tend to pronounce Māori words along those lines, for example, Ma-na-wa-tū Māori becomes Man-a-wat-u English. Ra-ngi-tī-kei becomes Rang-i-ticky (and many the other contortions that I hear on the radio and TV - Rang-a-tika etc.). The pronunciation of the 'ng' becomes easy if we pronounce it similar to the end of the word 'sing' and by adding the vowels to this word you get the correct pronunciation - si-nga, si-nge, si-ngi, si-ngo, sin-gu... Trust this helps those who are willing to recognise and use the language of the land of Aotearoa and its connection to the land and the people. 😍 Noho ora rā i roto i ngā manakitanga

Maharashtra considers making Marathi mandatory at junior college level The state government is mulling over making Marathi subjects compulsory at junior college level (Classes 11 and 12), as per the recommendations under the newly approved Marathi Language Policy. Earlier this month, Maharashtra passed the Marathi Language Policy, aimed at elevating the status of Marathi language by ensuring that it is preserved and promoted. It recommends introducing Marathi language letters to children in pre-schools, irrespective of the medium of the school, and offering Marathi as mandatory subjects at university level for two-credits. The policy, for the next 25 years, makes multiple recommendations under various areas where use of Marathi can be strengthened in order to promote the language, including education, industry, governance, law among all. In order to make it convenient, the policy recommends that Balbharati, the state textbook bureau, should prepare Marathi subject textbooks of various difficulty levels so that it comes handy for children of different non-Marathi medium schools. At higher education level, however, apart from mandating two-credit course, the policy also recommends that a considerable amount should be allocated for research in Marathi. The policy also recommends strengthening libraries and preserving the Modi script which is an ancient Marathi script.
