New post on my UAL blog. For my first project this term for Central Saint Martins, University of The Arts London, I was tasked with learning how to use a tool I was unfamiliar with via iteration. I chose to learn Blender, and ended up creating a type spec sheet in a method I call "virtual letterpress". I wanted to celebrate the glitchy, low poly art style of the early 2000s while at the same time, recreating the beloved analog letterpress debossed letterforms. The goal was to challenge the notion of what artefacts of production are celebrated, and which are discarded; why do we hold analogue to a different standard than digital? Throughout the three weeks I worked on this unit, there were so many times I questioned whether I'd be able to complete this project; if you don't know Blender is intimidating to learn and use. There are a million different ways to do the same task, and creating and rendering single objects as a beginner can take hours. There was a moment after I had spent 5 hours on the Donut that I considered changing tools to p5.js, *but* I stuck with it. I just tried to believe in myself and trust the process. Keep going! 📸 JPEG XL is a new format that will eventually replace the 30 year old JPEG. Why is this important? 🚀 “Smaller Files, Higher Quality, Faster Downloads.” - https://jpegxl.info/ JPEG XL delivers lossless compression at up to 32 bits per channel. It beats WebP on complex content without the 8-bit and size limitations. While it is not widely supported yet, its use cases are: 1️⃣ Image-rich UIs and web pages on bandwidth-constrained connections - Social media applications  - Screen readers/clicking on image text - Media distribution applications - Cloud storage applications - Media websites - Animated image applications - Mobile applications and games 2️⃣ High-quality imaging applications - Rapid photo viewing - HDR/WCG user interfaces - Augmented/virtual reality - Fast training of machine learning models - Image bursts - High-end photography - Image mosaics - Depth images - Decoding of untrusted sources - Printing Apple added support for capturing JPEG XL images with the iPhone16 line. Viewing and working with the files was added to the apple ecosystem one year ago. This means that if you are part of Apple's ecosystem you can start benefiting from the new format already but it will take time till everyone will adapt to it. Chrome and Firefox still don’t support the new format which means that websites and web apps still can’t make full use of it. It will take some time but JPEG XL will probably become the new standard. #webdev #jpegxl #ML

We need to do some work on the website front end (overdue), then make some changes to the lesson on Geometry, and finally get back to finishing the lesson on texturing.
