Beginning April 1, 2024, fast food workers in California must be paid $20.00 per hour under AB 1228, which was passed last year. The initial law only exempted certain bakeries and restaurants in grocery establishments. Last week, the California legislature passed and Governor Newsom signed into law AB 610. This law amended the fast food worker minimum wage law and expanded the exemptions for certain fast food restaurants. A comment on California’s fast food $20 minimum wage law—it does NOT apply to ALL fast food workers. It only applies to “fast-food chains with 60 or more locations nationwide.” Your 50 location fast food chain, or your single location fast food outlet, can legally pay its workers $16. This is a common theme in many “living wage” laws: “we commit to a LIVING wage…unless you work for a small business, in which case we don’t care about your unlivable wages.” https://lnkd.in/gDsEjKZf Oh…and some California learners, disabled people, and nonprofit employees don’t even get $16. No living wage for THEM. https://lnkd.in/guaJBscz
