Investing in #quality infrastructure up front makes all the difference. We see this in a lot of old stone building and roads that still stand hundreds of years later..... maintaining infrastructure is of course the second most important consideration when designing and building. Cc: The Plotnik

I like to compare this thought to architectural preservation. It can be easy to look at a dilapidated building and say, “knock it down.” But sometimes investing in the foundation, using creative restoration, and leveraging resources effectively can give way to restoring the beauty. So as a leader take a bit more time to contemplate your decisions.

Today, Historic England have published their HEAN (Historic England Advice Note) 18: 'Adapting Historic Buildings for Energy and Carbon Efficiency'. In my opinion (as an owner of historic buildings, as well as someone working in the heritage sector), this is a very welcome publication, with useful examples of how traditional methods can offer practical and pragmatic solutions to the challenges of reducing our carbon footprint. The Jubilee line extension stations are some of the most striking examples of successful contemporary transport infrastructure and architecture in the UK. They were opened as recently as 1999 but, surely, deserve consideration for listed status. There is a debate as to when something is old enough to qualify for listing protection but, if it's good enough, then why put some arbitrary qualifying figure like 25, 50 or 100 years on it? https://lnkd.in/eD4sZmRh
