The 29th session of Conference of Parties(COP) by United Nation Framework Convention on Climate Change UNFCCC (COP29) is going to be held from 11th November to 22nd November, 2024 in Baku, Azerbaijan and the platform has provided the opportunity to address the intersection of gender equality and climate policies and actions. Despite the progress made in UNFCCC’s process by establishing one of the constituencies as Women and Gender Constituencies out of nine other constituencies, formulating UNFCCC’s Gender Action Plan (GAP), Limma Work Programme on Gender which now is revised as Enhanced Limma Work Programme on Gender (ELWPG), the gender inequalities has always been there in the processes.
Women with diverse identities, marginalized, underrepresented, indigenous , rural communities particularly in the corners of developing countries, bear the most disproportionate impact of climate change due the existing inequalities in socio-economical, political, patriarchal systems, resulting in the unheard voices, least leadership opportunities in the major negotiations room and limited contributions to climate solutions. Hence, the current status of the inequalities demands transformative change.
This year ‘Gender at COP’ event is organized in collaboration with various like minded organizations like DBI , NIDWAN and others to seek the discussion on the priorities and focused area of the working organization/networks and individuals in this COP 29. The diverse collaboration also incorporates an intersectional perspective on gender issues. The discussion aims to guide the COP29 participants to follow the specific and urgent agenda that need to be followed during COP29 and also help the other participants to understand and effective planning of programs and plans in achieving gender-responsive plans and policies.
