At the midway point of 2024, we see action replacing ambition. How are you managing the six big themes in real estate? 1. Decarbonisation: Investors are decarbonising portfolios, focusing on secondary grade assets. The Net Zero by 2030 goal is driving demand for sustainable pathways. 2. Data Quality: The delay in Mandatory Sustainability Reporting has highlighted data collection challenges. Our new ESG data management solution is set to revolutionize sustainability metrics. 3. Nature and Biodiversity: Organizations like The GPT Group are crafting nature roadmaps for a Net Positive biodiversity impact. 4. Embodied Carbon: With tools like NABERS Embodied Carbon, the industry is moving towards low-embodied carbon designs. 5. Insurance Premiums: Climate-related disasters are increasing insurance costs. Our climate risk assessments inform strategic upgrades and manage financial impacts. 6. Social Value: The ‘S’ in ESG is gaining traction. We’re helping owners develop social strategies that align with global best practices. Mitie’s 2024 ESG Report Showcases Strong Progress Towards Sustainability Goals Mitie has released its 2024 ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) report, highlighting significant strides towards its sustainability objectives. The leading facilities management provider achieved or surpassed 13 ambitious targets for the past financial year (FY24), underscoring its dedication to its core social value pillars: Environment, People, Communities, and Responsible Supply Chain. Key highlights from the report include: Environmental Leadership As part of its ‘Plan Zero’ initiative, which aims to achieve net zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2025, Mitie has successfully reduced its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 5%. Major contributors to this reduction include the installation of low-carbon heat pumps across its sites and the ongoing transition to electric vehicles (EVs). With the introduction of its 5,000th EV, two-thirds (66%) of Mitie’s fleet is now fully electric, making it one of the largest electric fleets in the UK. In recognition of these achievements and its ongoing environmental efforts, Mitie received an ‘A’ grade for its carbon reduction strategy and reporting from the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), placing it in the top 2% of organisations evaluated annually. Beyond reducing its own environmental impact, Mitie has also leveraged its expertise in green solutions, such as solar power and biodiversity, to assist its clients in reaching their net zero goals. https://lnkd.in/eNQq7veB

Adoption of sustainable practices enables small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to lower expenses, appeal to environmentally aware consumers, strengthen their competitive position while simultaneously benefiting the environment and promoting the welfare of the community. Further, SMEs looking into sustainable projects could refer to the Energy Act of 2019 that supports renewable energy. It aims to ensure sustainable energy access, manage geothermal resources, and create a regulatory framework that fosters investment and competition in the energy sector. For SMEs to successfully implement sustainable projects they would need to:- 1. Perform a sustainability evaluation through assessment of operational processes to highlight potential areas for enhancement. This could be done through environmental impact assessment, sustainability audits, obtaining environmental licenses and permits and performing environmental management activities. 2. Set clear sustainability objectives and quantifiable goals within a predetermined period. 3. Regular training of staff in sustainability practices and feedback exchange programs. 4. Monitor and report progress: Consistently evaluate sustainability initiatives through adherence to several reporting framework standards such as Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) and Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures(TFCD) and report findings to stakeholders. Openness fosters trust and promotes ongoing improvement. #PwCInsights
