Facility Tour: The delegation toured Laviana’s GMP production base, led by Mr. Wang Jie, focusing on the intelligent central control room, corporate culture corridor, and technology achievements area. 3. Innovation Highlights: Laviana’s advanced intelligent central control system, integrating SIS, PLC, MES, and ERP for seamless management and green, low-carbon operations, was showcased, earning high praise from the delegation. 4. R&D Exchange: At the Tianjin R&D Center, Academician Zhang presented his research in the medical field and engaged in in-depth discussions with Laviana’s team on innovative technological applications in R&D and production. 5. Future Collaboration: This visit, led by Chairman Chen Wenting, provided valuable scientific insights and guidance. Measuring Success in Pharma: A decade of transformation Reflecting on my 2015 coursework on pharmaceutical efficiency at Saint Petersburg Chemical-Pharmaceutical Academy, I’m amazed at how much the industry has evolved. Back then, Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) were focused on metrics like fixed asset utilization, cost management, and labor productivity. The goal was clear - keep machines running, reduce downtime, and maximize output. 🍀 But in today’s pharma industry, efficiency means much more than that. It’s about running operations sustainably. Companies like Roche are pioneering green engineering and continuous manufacturing, where production flows seamlessly, cutting downtime and reducing energy consumption. With Process Analytical Technology (PAT), real-time monitoring enables instant adjustments, ensuring minimal waste and maximum efficiency. Efficiency now comes with an environmental conscience. 👣 Cost management has also transformed. Pfizer, for instance, uses metrics like Process Mass Intensity (PMI) and the E-Factor to track material efficiency and waste-lowering costs while minimizing their environmental footprint. 🚀 The same is true for labor productivity. AI, automation, and robotics are changing the game. At Novartis, humans and robots now work side by side, with AI optimizing workflows and reducing errors - pushing productivity to levels unimaginable a few years ago. 🍇 Profitability is also shifting. Merck is leading with Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), evaluating products from raw materials to waste disposal, and adopting sustainable Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) to cut costs and environmental impact. Profitability and sustainability are now inseparable. 🧐 Looking ahead, the future of KPIs will be shaped by AI and personalized medicine. Biomanufacturing requires validated and stable devices. Standardizing procedures requires a lot of iteration and fine-tuning. Today, designing new processes and scaling them up is a challenge, especially for new instrumentation and manufacturing methods. That's where our Biomanufacturing Qualification (BQ) team comes in. BQ is the group of biology specialists that test, verify, and validate the technologies developed by Stämm. To achieve this, they receive cells and media and produce results studied with bioanalytics. At Stämm, we test and optimize our products, such as our Bioprocessor, to continually improve them. BQ analyzes, adjusts, and discovers the most efficient ways to leverage them. In search of safety and traceability, they carry out tests and document them to ensure repeatability. The group is heterogeneous in their backgrounds: PhDs from academia, specialists from large industries, and others from the biotech startup world. This complementarity favors collaborative and interdisciplinary work, generating a cooperative environment. Their vision is dual. With the future in mind, BQ thinks about scaling for tomorrow. As for the present, their attention to detail makes it possible to shape that horizon. They require long hours in the lab, coordination, and trust: a consolidated team. The high volume of work can only be divided because the team members rely on each other. BQ transmits this internal way of doing things to the outside world, helping Stämm network with other companies. Missions such as BioArk's in Switzerland include their representatives, whose future role oscillates between operators and facilitators of the disruptive technologies they develop. Innovating Bioprocess Design: A New Database Resource Over the last couple of months, I've had the opportunity to speak with many founders and leaders in the biomanufacturing space. It's so exciting to see the level of innovation happening here! One area, in particular, gaining significant momentum is novel bioprocess design. 🌟 The trusty stirred tank design has been a staple in biopharma since its use for the mass production of penicillin during WWII. Since its humble beginnings, we've seen innovations across mixing and aeration, the incorporation of computational fluid dynamics, increased use of single-use systems, automated monitoring and process analytical technology, and increased cell density using perfusion and feeding strategies (to name just a few!). 🧬 With the transition to Industry 4.0 well underway, we're seeing an explosion of new bioreactor and bioprocess designs. From digital twin modeling, machine learning, and AI to hardware modifications, robotics, and automation, and new in-line monitoring and process control options. It is an incredible time to use biology to build new products in pharma, food, textiles, cosmetics, and specialty chemicals. 🧪🤖 In a 2020 McKinsey report, it was estimated that up to "60% of the physical inputs to the global economy could, in principle, be produced biologically." To achieve this, we need continuous and iterative innovations across the biomanufacturing value chain. 🌍 Given my strong personal interest in this space, I have started tracking as many companies as I can who are building innovative hardware or software solutions in the biomanufacturing space (for culturing animal cells).
