A huge thank you to POPS (Diane Curry OBE) for their swift response to a #SaferCustody concern over the weekend. I won't name the prison involved, but knowing the sector as I do, this is sadly not unusual. It is totally unacceptable for prisons to offer a 24/7 service for reporting concerns but not answer the phone. It is unacceptable to put prisoners' lives at risk by ignoring concerns from friends, family members, and professionals. By being the only team to respond, POPS has demonstrated the vital importance of having voluntary sector family services teams in each prison. On a related note, the Prisoners' Families Helpline has a Safer Custody Portal for reporting concerns online, should you need it. Prisons receive form submissions directly but are also currently supported to respond by the Helpline team (managed by Prison Advice and Care Trust (Pact)) - https://lnkd.in/eGK__3Qb. #PrisonReform #CriminalJusticeReform #MentalHealth

From Corbett Network member Women in Prison: Women are being criminalised while pregnant, and as a result of domestic abuse and mental ill-health, and then re-traumatised by our prisons, which are not a safe place for women. We know that the answer is not prison. As we call for the prioritisation of prevention, not prison, we look forward to working with the new ministers to reduce the women's prison population and end the harm of the criminal justice system on women's lives.

📢 Releasing Prisoners Early: Is That The Only Choice We Have Left? 📢 That's the topic for this week's video on the Commerce Meets Law YouTube channel! Due to the fear of UK prisons reaching capacity, the government has announced their decision to cut the time served in custody for most 'standard determinate sentences' by 40%, starting in September. Currently, they are released after serving 50% of their sentences. In this video, I discuss: 1. Current news headlines surrounding this issue 2. Why prisoners are being released early 3. The direct and indirect costs associated with prison 4. Whether there is an alternative to fixing the criminal justice system in England and Wales Hope you enjoy, please let me know your thoughts down below!

A new Children of Prisoners Europe report analyses responses from children in 10 countries (including Ireland) about experiences visiting a parent in prison. It highlights key areas for improvement to make prisons more child-friendly and shares children’s recommendations. Some of the recommendations include: 🔸 Make prison visiting rooms more welcoming, with coloured walls and materials or toys for children 🔸 Allow outdoor activities while children are visiting a parent in prison 🔸 Allow longer and more frequent visits 🔸 Adapt prison environments so they meet the needs of children with neurodivergent conditions coming to see a parent Read more about what the children said 👉 https://lnkd.in/e5N2s-bW

Let’s set people up to fail shall we… We are currently letting people out 35 days earlier This sounds like it’s good idea and a way to sort the over population issue. The prisons win (cells vacated) Good for the prisoner (freedom) I think it’s a short sighted sticky plaster fix and I’ll tell you why… A plan is in place for the original release date This may include, accommodation, benefits being ready, scripts being available and other support All will be actioned on original date of release They are now getting notified with little time to prepare or to get the support bought forward Many are low risk high need and what are they told? Just find a way to get through the next 35 days 💙🤦🏼💙 This is what may happen next The prisoners will breach licenses or reoffend out of desperation They will go back to court and end up in police cells or the locals they just left 💙😔💙 Yes this could work but it needs infrastructure that includes adequate support Designated and effective resources in the communities that they are going to need to succeed… Please please please stop with the knee jerk reactions and start to look at longer term solutions… What’s your thoughts? #prison #prisonreform #leadershipdevelopment #inspirationalspeaker

Without a vision, you are nothing but a prisoner in a jail, staying there your entire life. My mentee, Hanan Tariq, was shocked at first when she heard me say: 'You're a prisoner in a jail without a vision!' For the first time in her life, she began to realize that she needed a vision to be a free soul. YES, a vision can set you free. A vision can break your chains. A vision can break your prison. So, the question is: Would you rather be a prisoner in a jail your entire life, or a free human with a vision? Have you watched Prison Break? Do you think Michael Scofield would have broken his brother, Lincoln Burrows, out of prison if he had no vision? Think about it! Still unsure? Still can't figure it out? No worries! Are you ready to break free from your prison? Let’s connect, and I’ll help you, just like I’m helping Hanan and countless others break out of their prisons and become free souls! It all starts with a vision. I’ll show you how to transform your life with a vision that sets you free! - - - - - - - - - - [Transformation Stories - Chapter One: Hanan] Episode #9 #AJTransformationStories #HRM
