Motorsport and sustainability - our biggest challenge yet? We're excited to announce our partnership with Tunley Environmental, in efforts to lead the way in sustainability in motorsport. Tunley Environmental will be conducting a Business Carbon Assessment (BCA) and producing a Net Zero Roadmap, outlining our carbon footprint, and creating a plan to reduce our carbon output. We will also be measuring the impact of one of our racing vehicles. To do this, we’ll be undertaking a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of our BMW 240i, identifying its carbon impact, ways to reduce it and potential ways to achieve carbon neutrality across our fleet. The BMW was salvaged from the scrapyard in 2022 and re-built to become the competitive racing car it is today. Now, Tunley Environmental experts will help identify the value of this approach and the carbon saving achieved in recycling a vehicle in this way, setting new boundaries of possibility for sustainability within racing. Team Founder Dave Player: "“This isn’t just important for us, it’s important for every race team out there. I truly believe you don’t need to have F1-sized budgets to take this seriously. We’re a small team, but we have big ambitions in everything we do. These ambitions apply to this project in the same way as they do to our racing. We’ll make progress, we’ll see change, and we’ll do everything we can to share what we’ve learned, right across our sector.” Full story here: https://lnkd.in/esU5-aJS

Engwe E26 review: Testing out a budget-level 1,000W electric bike I’ve tested several Engwe electric bikes by now, and each time I’ve come away with a solid feeling. The Engwe E26 continues that trend with a fairly priced ($1,199) electric bike that comes with a surprising amount of nice features for the price. 🚗💨 The 24 Hours of Le Mans breaks attendance records and pioneers sustainability initiatives 🌍 The 92nd edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, held on June 15th and 16th, set a new attendance record with 329,000 spectators. While this is fantastic news for motorsports, it poses a challenge to sustainability. Indeed, the principle of the race is simple: the car that covers the most kilometers in 24 hours wins. However, the group Stop Le Mans criticizes this event for promoting the use of private cars and glorifying excessive power—features they deem unnecessary in everyday life. Meanwhile, the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO), which organizes the race, has committed to reducing emissions and fostering sustainable innovation in the automotive industry. The 24 Hours of Le Mans Pledge to Environmental Stewardship: • Achieve carbon neutrality by 2030 • Reduce emissions by 30% and offset the remaining 70% • Invest €500,000 to reach carbon neutrality Initiatives to Reduce Emissions: 🌱 Green Tickets: Introduced in 2022, these tickets offer reduced prices for attendees using low-emission transportation. By 2024, this initiative covered 7% of tickets, preventing 500 to 1,000 tons of CO2 emissions. 🌱 Sustainable Tires: Emissions related to tires and fuel have been reduced to 1.4% of the event’s carbon footprint (vs 2.5% in 2019). Michelin has also developed a tire comprising 63% bio-sourced materials, currently being tested. 🌱 Sustainable Endurance Awards: Since 2021, these awards have recognized competitors' commitments to social and environmental responsibility, particularly in their participation in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It is inspiring to witness more events, especially those historically associated with high emissions, taking significant steps toward sustainability and carbon neutrality. ⚡️ How is Formula E redefining sustainability in motorsport? 🏎️ Yesterday, I had the chance to be on a panel with Lars Stegelmann and Oliver Ciesla discussing the future of motorsport. One take-away: Motorsport is taking sustainability very seriously, more than what most people think. In this context, Formula E deserves a full case study. ⚡️ Formula E is not just a racing championship, it's a global platform pushing the boundaries of innovation, technology, and sustainability in sport. Here's a snapshot of their initiatives: ♻️ #NetZero Carbon Since Inception Since its launch in 2014, Formula E has maintained net-zero carbon status, accounting for all Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. They've achieved this by reducing emissions where possible and offsetting the remainder through verified carbon credits supporting renewable energy and reforestation projects. ⬇️ #Carbon Emissions Reduction The latest sustainability report of Formula E covers its 9th season, and it has continually tried to reduce its carbon footprint. During season 9, their carbon footprint was 32,600t CO2e, compared with 44,620 in season 5, a reduction of 27%. 🌱 #Sustainable Racing Events The championship prioritizes sustainable event management, including renewable energy for race operations, zero single-use plastics, and detailed waste management plans at each event. Tracks are often designed within existing cityscapes to minimize environmental disruption and maximize community engagement. 🔌 #Electric Innovation on the Track Formula E has accelerated the adoption of EV technology globally. By racing in urban centers, the series highlights how electric vehicles can transform city life, contributing to cleaner air and reduced emissions. Their GEN3 car is the world's most efficient race car, with over 40% of the energy used in a race coming from regenerative braking. 🌍 Sustainability Alliance #Partnerships Formula E collaborates with sustainability-focused partners such as ABB, Allianz, and UNICEF. These alliances enable impactful programs, like electrification in underserved regions and education initiatives on climate action, ensuring their influence goes far beyond the racetrack. 💧 United Nations Global Compact Commitment As a UN Global Compact participant, Formula E aligns with principles of environmental stewardship and sustainability. This includes publishing annual sustainability reports that openly detail their goals and progress. In a motorsport world often criticized for its environmental impact, Formula E demonstrates how innovation and sustainability can power a new era of sport. Congrats to Julia Pallé and her team for these amazing initiatives. 👏 PS: If you enjoy learning about sustainability in sport, you should check out EcoSports 🌟
