Comic Agilé no. 318 - Working for a Big Consultancy Here's our guide to finding out whether you're ready to take the next big step. #consultancy #bigconsultancy #consultant #comicagile
I do have some friends who have worked for big consultancies, but when I recommend them to others, I make it clear that I'm doing so on the basis that I watched them turn companies around with actual skin in the game, i.e. they came in as a consultant and got hired by the company and genuinely succeeded in the role. The thing about ignoring your own people has always made me laugh - I invented the word 'echloquation' to describe the sensation of hearing your own words presented back to you by an expensive consultant, and being irked when management took it seriously when they said it - but have come to accept it as a necessary part of having impact without formal authority: - No, they won't listen to me - Yes, they will listen to them - Consultants invariably concur with my position because we read the same textbooks and it looks like a duck and quacks - Therefore, the fastest way to get leadership buy-in for your great idea is to convince them to hire a consultant The £1000-a-day fee is a fine for managers to pay for not listening in the first place. As for cookie-cutter framework, Design Thinking, when the research and design parts are led by actual researchers/designers, works EVERY time. SAFe ... not so much.
This is why I prefer being a client and would never go back to consultancy but it comes with great frustration when you see how some of these consultancies operate and the traction they get in being listened to over in house staff who often have the answers.
True, so true. The so called ”consultant” business” is all fake. If you want to create something sustainable, throw them out and hire people who want to run what they build.
the price of hiring a consultant is so high that a company can afford agile SMEs for next few years and carve their own transition/transformation journey. That would be more transformative & sustainable than paying millions of dollars to consulting firms that shows no upgrade at the end of tenure.
I have a proposal for you: Comically Big Agilé It’s time to make real money, hit me up if you’re interested, I’m pretty good at making PowerPoints.
My 'naive' question. If we have the question, Who watches the watchers? I ask myself: Who do the consultants consult with?
Spot on. Doesn’t need to be a particularly big consultancy either tbh.
There is the answer - no big consultancy firm for me then 😂😂😂

19hMay I recommend visiting YouTube, and finding the well researched satirical clip from “The Last Week with John Oliver” on the topic of McKinsey. Insightful, very. As an aside, not mentioned in the clip, I have experienced their cookie-cutter approach to Agile in a number of organisations, and it is Scrum@Scale with Spotify terminology. 🤔
