VIDEO EDITING What is a video editor? ✨A video editor’s core function is to cut, trim and sequence separate video clips into a comprehensive narrative structure. This sequence eventually becomes the final release of a film or video. The video editor needs to understand aspects of the pre-production phase — such as the shot lists and storyboarding — and from the production phase — such as continuity and cinematography. ✨The video editor spends most, if not all, of their time in post-production. This is where they possess the majority of their skills. It is essential to learn a few key terms in the video, audio and color categories to grasp how to work on a project. Additionally, it is advantageous for the video editor to be familiar with motion graphics and visual effects. There are a number of post-production terms you should be familiar with. Here are a few of the most important ones by each category: 💥Video editing-specific terminology The terminologies discussed before were technical aspects of what a video editor must know and be familiar with. By understanding those terms, you will be able to dive into the bells and whistles of video editing, such as: ✨Montages – a montage is a sequence of various shots edited together to illustrate an idea. Ideally, the video editor attempts to add more visual information while occupying less screen space and at the same time keeping the flow of information accessible to the audience. ✨Transitions – a video transition is a post-production technique to connect one shot to another. The most used transition is the cut (instantly replacing one shot with the next), followed by dissolve (two clips overlap in time for a period of several frames), and fades (fade-out or fade-in, mainly used to show the passage of time). Video editing software comes with many transitions, but most of the time, you will be using the cut about 95 percent of the time. However, sometimes a carefully placed transition can add a stylistic visual effect to the production, so use them to your advantage. ✨Visual effects – visual effects — or VFX — allow complementing a scene by adding missing elements or removing unwanted things to make the scene shine. By integrating live-action footage and generated images, you create realistic environments you can’t capture on film. An example of visual effects would be a spaceship flying or CGI explosions. ✨Motion graphics – motion graphics are animated visual elements intentionally moved on the screen. A video editor can generate and animate stylized clips, lower third text animations, and complex title sequences, or even 3D compositions. Planning: Assists in planning the technical aspects such as camera angles, lighting, and shot composition. Communication: Facilitates clear communication of the director’s vision to the production team, including cinematographers, editors, and actors. Problem-Solving: Identifies potential issues in the narrative or technical execution before actual filming begins, allowing for adjustments to be made early. Components of a Storyboard Frames: Drawings or images representing each key shot or scene in the video. These can be simple sketches or detailed illustrations. Shot Descriptions: Written explanations accompanying each frame, detailing the action, camera movement, and any specific technical requirements. Dialogue and Sound: Notes on the dialogue or sound effects accompanying each scene, helping integrate audio and visual planning. Timing: Indications of the duration of each shot or scene, aiding in pacing the narrative. Camera Directions: Annotations about camera angles, movements (like pans, tilts, or zooms), and transitions (like cuts, fades, or dissolves). Steps to Create a Storyboard Script Breakdown: Break down the script into individual scenes and key moments. Identify the essential elements that need to be visually represented. Create a Template: Use storyboard templates with designated spaces for visuals and text. These can be drawn by hand or created using digital tools like Storyboard That, Adobe Photoshop, or specialized storyboard software. Draw the Frames: Sketch or use images to represent each key shot. Focus on framing, composition, and key actions within each shot. The drawings can be simple stick figures or more detailed illustrations depending on the project's needs. Add Descriptions: Write detailed descriptions for each frame, including the action, dialogue, and technical notes. Specify camera movements, angles, and transitions. Sequence the Shots: Arrange the frames in the order they will appear in the video. Ensure the sequence logically follows the script and maintains narrative flow. STORYBOARDS. (pre shoots for Storyboarding) . . (Video extracts: headphones on) For visual artists like photographers and filmmakers, I believe animators too, storyboards are key parts to their workflow, an exercise that starts in the pre production phase and goes through to the D.O.P and so forth. and later on I will share how my storyboards look like. My process does seem a little unconventional because I work from my head, so at most when working alone, that storyboard would be in my head because I know what I want, the challenge came when I had to be part of a team, so I had to produce them. So for easy interpretation, I always do test shoots, especially for not very big productions, and I'll put that through edit, and ten create a final storyboard from that, so I'll have it on paper, and I'll have it in moving image. like I said, its unconventional, and it works for me. So here is my moving image story board for an ongoing project. Planning a video shoot for your business? Here's what to expect: We always start any video project with a call. We can ask you lots of questions to get a really good idea of what you want. If this is the first time you have been involved in a professional video shoot, you will want to gather some information first. For example, if you are wanting to create a branding video to put on your website, we will need the following info: How many people will be in the video? Will this be interview style or scripted? If it will be scripted, will you need a teleprompter? Will you want assistance with pre production (i.e. writing scripts/interview questions, finding a location, creative direction for b roll, etc.)? What type of b roll are you wanting to include? Do you have a location in mind for filming? Do you have an example of another video you have done in the past or from another company that you like? How long would you like the video to be? When do you need the final video by? Would you like a vertical social media version as well? Interested in drone footage and/or still photography? All of these questions are super important to help us create a customized quote for your project. We will determine how much time will be needed for filming and editing, how many videographers we need, and what gear we will need for filming. We really value taking the time to understand our clients needs and vision for each project so we can deliver exactly what they are looking for. If you are planning on doing a video for your business, it's helpful to have at least some of this information pulled together ahead of time.
