📢 Why Marketers Need to Embrace the 95:5 Rule In my last post, I talked a little bit about the 60:40 rule- 60% of budgets should fuel long-term brand equity, with 40% dedicated to short-term performance gains. Well, here comes another rule, the 95:5 Rule. When it comes to digital marketing, one thing is clear: most buyers aren’t ready to buy right now. This insight, highlighted in Peter Weinberg & Jon Lombardo’s piece on the 95:5 rule (link in the comments below), turns traditional marketing strategies on their head. The rule states that only 5% of buyers are actively in-market, while 95% are out-of-market, making future-focused brand building the key to long-term success. Here’s what this means for us as marketers: 🎯 Set Realistic Objectives Stop expecting short-term campaigns to drive immediate sales. The majority of marketing effects are long-term, so let’s align our expectations accordingly. 🎨 Rethink Creativity Product-centric, “buy this now” ads only resonate with the 5%. For the other 95%, memorable, bold, and even outside of the box creative wins. It’s about staying top-of-mind until buyers are ready to fall further down your funnel. 📡 Expand Distribution Don’t just hyper-target today’s decision-makers; aim for broad reach to influence the category and prepare future buyers. Think of it as an investment: marketing memories today for returns tomorrow. The 60:40 rule shifted the balance between brand and performance marketing, the 95:5 rule pushes us to prioritize relevance over urgency and visibility over persuasion. The takeaway? Focus less on convincing buyers today and more on being the brand they remember when they’re ready tomorrow. Are you applying the 95:5 rule in your marketing?
