Can't we just figure out a way to harvest more sharks? In my latest article for Outdoor Hub, I discus a project that was launched by the Bonefish Tarpon Trust. The project stems from a survey of anglers who fish inshore areas from Biscayne Bay south to Key West and west to Florida Bay and the Everglades. Their findings show a steady increase in shark depredation over the past ten years, with a marked inflection point around 2014-2015, when rates rose sharply. https://lnkd.in/gzT9xbhf

I love this NPR story for so many reasons. Not only does it illustrate the power of human resilience ("They’re teeny ladies, and I know that the Fish & Wildlife shot the final shot to kill it. But these ladies killed that cougar with their bare hands and no weapons."), but it also highlights both the ethical and the aesthetic dimensions of human and non-human interactions. While the cougar had her friend pinned to the ground with his jaws, one of the women noticed his "beautiful amber-colored stare." After Fish & Wildlife shot the cat, the women said that the moment was "heartbreaking." They were able to recognize tragedy of a life lost, despite the very real threat to human life. As humans continue to encroach upon non-human habitat, we have to come to terms with tragedies that will ensue. And the tragedy in this story could very easily have ended the other way. The real courage in this story, in my opinion, is that of recognizing the value of this non-human life, and the tragedy of loss in the face of human survival (though fighting off a cougar with sticks and bikes is quite heroic!). Can we continue to model this kind of respect for our non-human neighbors? Can we cultivate it into something that helps us embrace both human and ecological flourishing? The two don't have to be mutually exclusive. #humannaturerelations #ecoflourishing #environmentalethics #ethicofcare

" Greenland sharks have the longest lifespan of any known vertebrate, estimated to be between 250 and 500 years.[3] They are among the largest extant species of shark, usually growing to between 2.4 and 7 m (7.9 and 23.0 ft) long and weighing between 400 and 1,400 kg (880 and 3,090 lb). They reach sexual maturity at about 150 years of age, and their pups are born alive after an estimated gestation period of 8 to 18 years. The shark is a generalist feeder, consuming a variety of available foods. Greenland shark meat is toxic to mammals due to its high levels of trimethylamine N-oxide,[5] although a treated form of it is eaten in Iceland as a delicacy known as kæstur hákarl.[6] Because they live deep in remote parts of the northern oceans, Greenland sharks are not considered a threat to humans, and no recorded attacks have ever occurred." https://lnkd.in/g8TtMYYW ENJOY THE VIDEO BELOW :- https://lnkd.in/gS_jdMXM
