It’s not a matter of technique, tricks, or tools; it’s all about behaviours. https://lnkd.in/gr5HfgSe

💞 Trust is the first of The Five Behaviors®—without it, there can be no growth or transformation. It’s challenging to navigate without it, and critical for everyone on the team. It is not just any kind of trust though. It is vulnerable trust. ❓ Does your team feel safe admitting they made a mistake? ❓ Do employees feel safe raising their hand to say they do not understand a concept being reviewed in a meeting? ❓ Do they feel safe letting you know that something personal has happened and could impact their work? ❓ Do they feel comfortable letting the team know they might need help in order to meet a deadline? 🔦 If they cannot do these things, then your team lacks vulnerable trust. Without vulnerable trust in the situations above, deadlines are missed, work quality goes down, team frustration rises, and trust continues to deteriorate. The cycle will continue until you address the issue. Start with the foundation of trust. Eager to dive into the Five Behaviors? This week, we are highlighting the importance of diversity and inclusion. Yesterday I had an insightful Leqture session featuring the brilliant Dr Tharaka Gunarathne. The topic of discussion? Psychological Safety in the workplace. Dr. Tharaka emphasized the crucial role of trust within teams. Trust is a key component of psychological safety and directly impacts our ability to collaborate effectively. The more trust we have, the more we reduce the chances of burnout and create an environment where everyone feels secure and valued. Everything from asking people for help or their feedback, to relying on a teammate to meet a deadline is a sign of trust. Collaboration, integrity, and innovation are built on it. But how can we proactively measure and increase our trustworthiness? Trust Equation! By building trust, we lay the groundwork for teams to truly thrive! 💼✨ Happy to be part of my team at Vontobel where trust is important and where we have the opportunity to learn about these important topics. The dichotomy of trust in business is a dynamic balance between confidence and caution. While trust fosters growth and innovation, caution ensures sustainability and integrity. By understanding and navigating this dichotomy, businesses can build stronger, more resilient relationships and achieve long-term success. Confidence is the backbone of proactive business interactions. When you trust someone, you empower them to take initiative, innovate, and make decisions that drive progress. This aspect of trust fosters a positive environment where creativity and problem-solving thrive. Employees who feel trusted are more likely to take ownership of their work, leading to increased productivity and job satisfaction. However, trust without caution can lead to vulnerabilities. In the business context, this means implementing checks and balances to ensure that trust is not misplaced. It's about verifying credentials, conducting due diligence, and establishing clear expectations and accountability measures. This cautious approach helps in safeguarding the organization's interests and maintaining the integrity of business operations. In order to strike the balance between confidence and caution, we need to operate with transparent communication, empowerment with accountability, continuous learning, risk management, and feedback mechanisms. Open and honest communication is key with regular check-ins and updates ensure that everyone is aligned and aware of their responsibilities and the progress being made. However, while it's important to give employees the freedom to make decisions, it's equally important to hold them accountable. Setting clear goals and performance metrics helps in monitoring progress without micromanaging. By encouraging a culture of continuous learning and improvement, trust can be built over time by learning from mistakes and refining processes to prevent future errors. Developing robust risk management strategies to identify potential threats and mitigating them not only protects the organization but also instills confidence in stakeholders. Implementing effective feedback mechanisms allows for continuous improvement and reinforces trust because regular feedback helps identify issues early and address them before they escalate. In your own business practices, how do you balance confidence and caution? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below. 'I invite readers to deconstruct the key performance metrics they and their direct reports are subject to. It is then important to ask what behaviors do each of those component parts incent? Are those the behaviors the organization really wants? If not, what mitigating controls or policies might need to be put in place?'
