Recently, I did a podcast episode with Justine Mulliez on her show Creatives in the Wild about my journey running Port Side Productions and some of the lessons I've learned along the way. We chatted about: - My journey from video production hobbyist to full-time business owner Pricing philosophy, value-based pricing challenges in video production industry - Choosing team members for video projects based on skills and compatibility - Expressing your creative value beyond just deliverables - Finding clients who already value your work, rather than convincing them - The vulnerability behind both creating and selling creative work and pushing through discomfort - Avoiding distractions— even learning can be a distraction from creating - Prioritizing client relationships and high-quality work to succeed in freelancing Give it a listen: https://lnkd.in/g9kj4hyF

Just wrapped up editing and posting an incredible week of Boss Responses podcast episodes with the amazing Liz Heflin, and today's episode was both empowering and convicting. It was a true masterclass in rate setting for freelancers. Liz dropped so many knowledge bombs that I'm still reeling! Let me share a few gems that really stuck with me: When talking about her early freelancing days, Liz admitted: "I was always comparing what I could make in freelance to what you could make in an office and using that as a point of comparison. And that's just not a realistic or a healthy way to set your rates … I had no idea how much I was undercharging. No idea. I thought I was perfectly happy with the rates I was making. I thought I was crushing it." Whew! How many of us have been there? ✋ Then, Liz hit us with this truth about hourly rates: "I always had this idea, if I'm hourly, at least I'm getting paid for every minute, every second that I put into that project. But obviously the longer you work, the better you get at your job. The more you know that client, the more, the industry. The faster and more efficient you get, you are literally penalizing yourself for being better at your job when you stick to hourly." Ouch. Truth sometimes hurts. And for all of us battling imposter syndrome (hello, everyone?), Liz shared this wisdom: "Just like freelancing is specific to each person, how they operate, how you get over mental hurdles is very personal to you there. I wish there were a confidence wand that I could just bop people on the head and magically now they're okay with their rates forever. But obviously that doesn't exist." Two things from that. 1) We ALL have mental hurdles we have to deal with in our business. 2) I will never be able to look at Liz again without picturing her as a rate-related fairy godmother. These snippets barely scratch the surface of our in-depth conversation. If you're a freelancer (or thinking about becoming one), I can't recommend this episode enough. Liz's expertise and insights make for an enlightening and empowering listen. Have you struggled with setting your rates? What strategies have worked for you? Let's chat in the comments! 👇 #Freelancing #RateSetting #PodcastInsights #FreelanceSuccess

Start your day with the intention that’s right for you… As a freelancer, we can sometimes feel like there’s no direction. You are your own boss, which can be both a blessing and a curse. It’s a blessing because you don’t have to answer to anyone but a curse because you also don’t have to answer to anyone, which can lead to procrastination and if you don’t have the motivation on that particular day, It can lead to not much work being done. When I feel like this, I like to set an intention so I can hold myself accountable! Or sometimes, I remember my bigger intentions about why I started freelancing in the first place. Whatever you are feeling, setting an intention will help you find a clear focus to get your work done! Love, Kat _____________________ Hello!
