This morning the Europe’s Rail Joint Undertaking organised with the Belgian EU Presidency  an interesting event on “The Future of Rail Freight – see how it works in the 21st century!”. The event was about promoting the deployment of the rail digital automated coupling (DAC). #DAC is seen as one of the main push to revert the declining trend of freight rail transport in Europe, by making the wagon loads and their management more efficient and to achieve increased rail capacity and modal shift. #EIM is following this debate very closely, as DAC deployment will involve more than 200 stakeholders and some €13bil of financing by the Member States, the EU  and industry. The challenge is how to build up a business case to attract investments. This morning we have learned that the Swiss authorities have already taken the decision to invest in DAC deployment. And the EU? Well: during the event  the Belgian, German and Latvian Transport Ministers have declared their support to DAC. Let’s see how these statements of political support will turn into real financial commitment by the EU Members States.

It was an honor to welcome dr. Josef Doppelbauer, Executive Director of European Union Agency for Railways and representatives from the Ministry of Transport and Communications and Lithuanian Transport Safety Authority at our office. We had a good time in discussing how we, at LTG, see the full integration of broad-gauge railways into the European railway systems, and what progress has been made in implementing the #FREERail programme. Elimination of existing exemptions from the single European rules and standards - this is the key answer how we boost our full integration and enhance our resilience against the aggressor countries. 🔺 The EU Council of Ministers has approved a new regulation for the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), which provides for the development of a new European gauge railway line to Klaipeda (Klaipėdos uostas/Port of Klaipėda). The updated document also refers to a transport corridor connecting the Baltic, Black and Aegean Seas and additional connections to Ukraine. 🔺 This was reported by the Ministry of Transport of Lithuania. 🔊 "The development of the North-South transport corridor, which provides strategically important links to the countries of Northern, Southern and Western Europe, is of paramount importance to Lithuania. The inclusion of the European railway line to Klaipeda in the new TEN-T regulation is a great achievement for our country and the entire Baltic Sea region, which will help accelerate the development of infrastructure of European importance and provide greater opportunities for passenger, freight and military mobility," said Loreta Maskalioviene, Deputy Minister of Transport of Lithuania. 🔺 Such a decision will provide an alternative to road transport and help diversify the activities of the Lithuanian seaport and open new markets. 🔺 In accordance with the requirements of the Regulation, a feasibility study of the Lithuanian railway network is to be prepared, which will assess the options and stages of the transition of the entire Lithuanian railway to the European gauge standard. It is expected that a joint coordinated plan will be developed for the transition of the Baltic countries to the 1435 mm gauge network. 🔺 In addition, it is envisaged to expand four European transport corridors of the TEN-T network to Ukraine and Moldova and reduce cross-border traffic with Russia and Belarus. 📢 Intense weeks in the EU institutions and the transport community! The Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU closed the current legislative term with yesterday’s meeting of the Transport Council. ❓ The results? Weights & Dimensions of Trucks 🤗 EU Member States were not able to find an agreement (general approach) on the cross-border traffic of longer and heavier trucks due to concerns brought forward also by UIP & other rail organisations. A progress report was published instead. The text weakens the proposal of the EU Commission and exploits rail capacity sub-optimally. Media Release by the Prime Minister’s Office. SOLOMON AIRLINES REAFFIRM COMMITMENT TO BRISBANE-SANTO DIRECT Friday, 21 June 2024 – Honiara, Solomon Islands. A delegation led by the Hon. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and External Trade, Hon. Matai Seremaiah Nawalu met with the Solomon Airlines today. The purposes of the meeting were to review the preparation for the re-introduction of the Brisbane-Santo direct international service as well as the support for resumption of domestic services in Vanuatu. Solomon Airlines have reaffirmed their commitment to support air connectivity in Vanuatu, following the indefinite suspension of Air Vanuatu’s operations since 09 May 2024. On 10th June 2024, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vanuatu (CAAV) granted approval to Solomon Airlines to operate a weekly service between Brisbane-Santo, to commence in July 2024. Operational and commercial arrangements are currently underway to ensure the successful re-launch of the service into the Northern Province of Vanuatu. End

The #EUCouncil finally adopted the revised regulation concerning the development of the trans-European transport network (#TENT). The act still needs to be signed by the Presidents of the EU Council and the European Parliament before being published in the EU’s official journal. The regulation will then enter into force 20 days after the publication. #railfreight #railfreightnews #railcargonews

After the start of its invasion of #Ukraine, #Russia suspended its regular priority rules for the rail network. Since then, Russian Railways (#RZD) has had the authority to determine who gets to go first. Now that the regular priority rules are supposed to make a return on 1 January, RZD is pushing to stay in the driver’s seat beyond that date. #railfreight #railfreightnews #railcargonews
