++++ Oil Spill: Accurate forecasts from CMCC on the Kerch Strait ++++ On Sunday, December 15, following an incident between two oil tankers in the Kerch Strait. After this event, CMCC started the daily production of oil spill forecasts and delivered them to the competent National and International authorities. In the days following the event, the accuracy of the forecasts produced by CMCC was confirmed by satellite images produced by e-GEOS based on satellite information provided by the Agenzia Spaziale Italiana and the Ministero della Difesa. “This episode is an important confirmation of the advanced scientific level of the forecasts produced by CMCC for predicting the drift of oil spills,” commented Giovanni Coppini, who leads the global coastal research program at CMCC. “The accuracy of this information is crucial for understanding the dynamics of marine spills and promptly providing support to competent authorities to plan their actions at sea.” Simulations were performed using the Medslik-II oil spill model. Ocean currents were provided by Copernicus Marine Service for the Black Sea (produced by CMCC). ECMWF meteorological forecast was provided by the Italian Air Force Meteorological Service.
