Key Insights from Gartner: The Evolving Role of the Digital Workplace I’ve just finished reading Gartner’s article on the Digital Workplace, and it offers some excellent insights into how this space is evolving. The key takeaway? The Digital Workplace is no longer just an extension of IT—it’s a strategic entity in its own right. With the Head of Digital Workplace now often reporting directly to the CIO, the function has a clear mandate to drive business value and employee enablement. Gartner highlights several pressing challenges and opportunities for organisations today, including: - The shift towards a modern operating model, where the focus is on employee enablement rather than just technology management. - The rise of mobile working and the need for Martini IT—anytime, anywhere, on any device—making agility and hybrid approaches the norm. - How businesses can capitalise on disruptive technologies like AI and automation to improve the digital employee experience (DEX) and drive productivity. One of the critical points Gartner raises is the importance of Unified Endpoint Management (UEM), which enables businesses to securely manage and control devices across diverse environments, ensuring that employees have seamless access to the tools they need. However, I believe we can take this concept even further with Continuous Endpoint Engineering (CEE). Unlike traditional UEM, CEE focuses on continuous monitoring and improvement of devices, ensuring not just security, but optimal performance and user experience—particularly crucial in today’s hybrid and mobile-first workplaces. From my own experience, I’ve seen organisations grapple with the challenge of consolidating end-user practices. The expectation was that this would be achieved by now, but in many cases, it hasn’t materialised. Some organisations even rolled back their consolidation efforts into traditional IT infrastructure due to the perceived complexities of balancing operational efficiencies but ignoring the effect on employee experience. While the challenges are real, the opportunity for businesses to use the Digital Workplace as a driver of growth is greater than ever. What do you think about Gartner’s analysis? This is such a critical message. It’s easy to hype digital solutions (or AI, for that matter) without an understanding of the importance of a flexible and sustainable foundation of infrastructure, operations, and cross-functional governance.

Digital Workplace Operating Model: Design an agile digital workplace that supports a diverse, hybrid workforce and scales with a lower cost of change to accommodate a constant stream of new devices, workloads, applications, usage patterns and business demands. - Embrace employee preference through expanded computing options. Ensure that support for operating systems is consistent in strategy and quality, and that a balanced mix of mobile devices, laptops, desktops, thin clients, VDI and DaaS is offered - Replace traditional telephony (PBX and desk phones) with unified communications (UC) and collaboration (UCC) to increase employee mobility and productivity. - Take ownership of and aggressively manage the operational, security and financial impacts of the quickly expanding usage of SaaS applications. - Capitalize on innovative and disruptive technologies like generative AI

Confused as to how to navigate the #DigitalWorkplace? This may explain why. We are still largely working as we did pre-2020 - technology focused. For us to realise the value of our tech we need our practices to be business value focused. But how do we do this? It's critical we take a step back. Rather than incrementally adding new tools, we need to go back and look at what we do, and how it can be improved. Then look for where the value of technology can be realised.
