December's a good time to hone your negotiation skills – your team needs to be on top of them because your competitors are pushing to maximize sales in Q4. We'll talk about three aspects of negotiation this month. Today, preparedness. So – what counts as being prepared when a rep enters negotiations? From our experience working with myriad clients, the most important points are having: - a clear goal - product knowledge - market insights - confidence in navigating objections - a firm grasp of how to secure favorable terms That last one is difficult for less-experienced reps. In a B2B sales context, being prepared to secure favorable terms means they can confidently negotiate aspects of the sale that enhance value for both parties. This could include: - Establishing optimal pricing and discount structures. - Setting terms around delivery timelines, payment plans, or contract duration. - Securing commitments on service levels, customization options, or future partnership opportunities. This can sound like high-level stuff. But without this aspect of preparedness – or any of the others mentioned – your rep is going to fall down in negotiations and perhaps lose a deal.
