ISC 2024 Logistics Part 2: Travel With the deadline of the 31st July for early bird registration rapidly approaching we will be looking at the logistics of attending ISC 2024 through a series of posts over the next week. We have speakers and delegates joining us at ISC 2024 from all over the world. With such a large conference, taking place over 5 days, covering all aspects of chromatography and across every industry, it is well worth making the trip for learning, sharing, networking, having fun and much more! Air travel: Travelling to Liverpool is easy, with 2 International Airports, Manchester and Liverpool, both within 45 minutes of the City Centre, from which 75 airlines fly to 223 destinations. There is even a free return shuttle service between Manchester airport and Liverpool City Centre! Train travel: Travelling from Europe or within the UK? Why not take the train instead, a more sustainable way to travel (we do have a sustainability theme). Liverpool is 2.25 hours from London Euston railway station, which is just down the road from St Pancras International railway station. You can travel to Liverpool Lime Street or Liverpool Central railway stations from all over the UK. Bus travel: The conference venue to is in the heart of Liverpool, with regular bus services from all around the local area, including Liverpool airport. By car: Liverpool is also easily reached by road, from the M6 take the M62, M58 or M56 direct to the city centre. The "Alliance Challenge" Routes Europe just successfully finished and host Aarhus can be proud what they achieved and how they presented the second biggest city of Denmark. Being the second biggest city with many dynamic companies behind, its from the outside view a bit surprising that the airport is just ranking number 4, behind Copenhagen, Billund and Aalborg. SAS, being the backbone to fly business travellers via their Hub Copenhagen. Business travellers in general are very concious to collect their bonus miles for travelling and are keen to improve their status. So far SAS as a founding member of "Star Alliance" (back in 1997), was a reliable partner for many travellers, counting on their loyalty miles. With the soon coming change of SAS to join the Air France / KLM "Skyteam" party, this will mean a dramatic change to many travellers. When asked at Routes the CEO of SAS, Anko van der Werff, he is confident the impact will be low, as SAS got some 8 million EuroBonus members on their account. But often the travel behaviour may not follow rational reflections, simply follows other, more personal preferences: how can I continue to beef up my (Star Alliance) mileage account? As Billund (BLL), the second biggest player is not so far away (about 70 minutes by coach transfer), the risk is there that Aarhus (AAR) my loose some business travellers, who don't want to give up their carefully assembled (Star Alliance) status, as BLL enjoys excellent connections to the Star Alliance Hubs FRA or MUC by Lufthansa. This may develop to a serious challenge for AAR and its premium traveller community. The majority of travellers belong to the SME category, mostly with no controlled travel management behind. Travellers can book and decide by their own. Often critics claim the airline alliances system is a bit out of business. I doubt so. I see still the power of alliances to keep travellers loyal to the systems, to earn their miles - and a convincing point, often far from rational and even cost or time related arguments. So it will be interesting to watch, who'll be the winner in that competition: AAR or BLL?

ALL THINGS ETRC. JULIE LASSAIGNE, SECRETARY GENERAL, INTERVIEWED. The European Travel Retail Confederation (ETRC) does some very important work behind the scenes for the travel retail industry. I caught up with Julie Lassaigne recently at the ACI Europe Commercial and Retail Conference, where she was a speaker. We cover a lot of ground in this interview, including how TR and Duty Free has rebounded since COVID, how ETRC is working to promote awareness of TR at the very top European levels, what progress is being made in advancing Arrivals Duty Free in the EU from third party countries, digital labelling, sustainability, EU legislation, air passenger rights to carrying duty free purchases onboard and the challenges and opportunities for the industry in the coming years. There is much information and interest for all. ETRC also supported this ACI Europe conference by sponsoring the closing keynote speaker, Matthew Brown, Founder, Echochamber - another tremendous session to end what was a very successful day.
