Today is #WorldOxygenDay, and I will be sharing my review of the  the National Policy on Medical Oxygen in Health Facilities in Nigeria. This policy is crucial for making sure medical oxygen is available, affordable, and accessible for everyone who needs it. Key Points from the Policy: 1. Equitable Access: The policy prioritizes making medical oxygen accessible to vulnerable groups, including children, pregnant women, and people with chronic diseases. 2. Quality Assurance: It includes measures to maintain the quality of medical oxygen, covering standards for production, storage, and delivery. 3. Human Resource Development: The policy highlights the importance of having trained healthcare professionals to effectively administer oxygen therapy. 4. National Oxygen Supply Chain: It promotes building a reliable and efficient supply chain for medical oxygen. Areas for Improvement: 1. Monitoring and Evaluation: The policy could be stronger with more detailed guidelines for monitoring and evaluation. 2. Emergency Preparedness: There’s a need for more in-depth guidance on emergency preparedness. 3. Cost-Effectiveness Analysis: Including cost-effectiveness analyses could better inform how resources are allocated. Oxygen is a life-saving resource - yet half of the world’s population has no access to medical oxygen. Today, we are celebrating #WorldHealthDay under the theme "My health, my right" which highlights the need for everyone on the planet to have access to medical oxygen. 👉We are proud to be able to contribute to this goal. We have started this work in Africa, where pneumonia is the leading cause of death in children under 5 – despite the fact that such deaths can be prevented with antibiotics and oxygen. The COVID-19 pandemic revealed gaps in the ability of the Ivorian health care system to provide medical oxygen in health care facilities during periods of increased demand. Previously, private companies supplied oxygen to hospitals in Abidjan. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Côte d’Ivoire acquired six oxygen-producing pressure swing adsorption (PSA) plants located at health facilities. Deferred maintenance resulted in the PSAs malfunctioning and the subsequent unavailability of oxygen. Thanks to an investment of more than US$6 million from USAID, more than 8 million people living in Côte d’Ivoire will have access to oxygen by October 2024. https://bit.ly/3ZkUT2L

South Africa is home to three major oxygen manufacturers, yet rural and remote regions of the country still face constrained access to medical oxygen. Some of the barriers limiting access include lack of essential oxygen infrastructure, delivery devices, and skilled staff to maintain oxygen-related equipment. The tide is changing though. An assessment across 106 facilities, supported by CHAI and other partners, identified barriers to oxygen access and potential solutions. With the signing of new supply agreements with two oxygen suppliers, more regions in the country will benefit from enhanced access to affordable liquid oxygen. Additionally, the government is working with partners to train more staff and acquire oxygen delivery devices to ensure everyone who needs medical oxygen, including young children, will have access to it when they need it. OXYGEN IS A HUMAN RIGHT Currently, national and international organisations are designing and executing actionable means to expand access to medical oxygen as it is underserved in developing countries like Nigeria. However it is critical to sensitize healthcare leaders on the need for a well designed medical gas network, both for facilities and ambulances. The era of moving cylinders is so cliche and unsafe. For over a decade, Healthbox Group has been at the forefront delivering well planned medical gas network to hospitals as well as installation of oxygen gas plant. This is the last picture I took 😔 ICU at Soba university teaching hospital on the fifth day of war last year. Highlighting the critical healthcare crisis in Sudan amidst war, patients in Sudan today suffer from limited access to critical care facilities. While I don't have statistics on the number of patients needing intensive care due to the war in Khartoum and Madni, where the two largest cities with intensive care units are located, we can imagine the extent of the suffering. we can also imagine The scarcity of hospital access ,medications for chronic diseases pose severe challenges, leading to complications for patients in need. #SudanHealthCrisis #CriticalCare #KeepEyesOnSudan
