How much time does your team spend chasing down information for a single workers’ comp claim? It depends (in part) on what state you’re in. Workers’ compensation programs are state regulated, so the filing and appeals process for workers’ comp claims can vary significantly from one state to the next. What a billing specialist in one state can get done in a day might take months for a team in a different state. As you know, the longer it takes, the more expensive it becomes for your organization. How does your state compare? Workers' Comp vs. Short-Term Disability: Far too often, I see employees and managers confusing the two. Understanding the Difference Navigating workplace injuries and illnesses can be confusing, especially when it comes to understanding the nuances of workers' compensation and short-term disability. Let's break down the key differences and when to report each: Workers' Compensation * Coverage: Covers injuries or illnesses that arise directly from your job. * Eligibility: Typically requires that the injury or illness occurred while you were working or performing job-related duties. * Benefits: Covers medical expenses related to the work injury or illness, lost wages, and sometimes vocational rehabilitation. * Reporting: Report a work injury or illness to your employer as soon as possible, often within a specific timeframe. Short-Term Disability * Coverage: Provides income replacement for a temporary period due to a non-work-related illness or injury. * Eligibility: Often requires a waiting period before benefits start, and you may need to meet specific eligibility criteria set by your employer or insurance provider. * Benefits: Provides a portion of your regular income for a limited time. * Reporting: Contact your employer's HR department or your insurance provider to initiate the claims process as soon as possible.
