I’m on my way to Impact Europe’s #ImpactWeek 2024. And I do so with both anticipation and sadness. 🌟 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 of the rich discussions and content we will explore with changemakers from all corners: investors, donors, corporates, social entrepreneurs. The themes are many, and I’m particularly excited to lead a discussion with ClientEarth's Adam Weiss on #climate justice (and the power of the #law) and share the stage with Giulia Corinaldi on the investment opportunities around #justtransitions, based on a mapping Laudes Foundation commissioned with Climate Horizons, along with Wallace Global Fund and Ford Foundation. On Friday, I'll explore, with Peter Cafferkey, the impact potential of foundation #endowments. 🌟𝐒𝐚𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 because this will be my last Impact Week as Chair of this incredible organisation, who, under Roberta Bosurgi’s leadership, has continued to go from strength to strength. I’m proud of how we, with the board and the team, have been able to build on #EVPA's 20-year legacy (thanks, Douglas Miller) and expand what I think is a unique and compelling platform enabling #investment for #impact across the continuum of capital. Fond memories as I look back on ImpactFest 2024 last Thursday, Europe’s leading impact event. Big thank you for the great conversation to my co-panelists Dora Chi Xu, René van Geer and Agnes Weber, gracefully guided by Ikenna Azuike. We touched upon topics such as the impact and importance of local initiatives on the global circular economy, behavioural change and the role of the private sector in circular practices. Personally and from a CircuLaw perspective, I found the discussion on the role of public policy and legislation particularly interesting. The message I aimed to convey to the room full of impact entrepreneurs was this: when it comes to regulation, don’t just concentrate on the obstacles. It’s equally important to identify the norms, standards, and criteria that governments should implement to give your business a leading advantage—particularly since your circular product or service already complies, offering a competitive edge over more traditional, ‘linear’ companies. Organise yourselves as a strong, unified collective, stay informed about upcoming legislation, and engage in strategic lobbying. Following a serene gathering of RisingGens around tea, we shifted our pace to a buzzing gathering of Sustainable Finance Initiative Family Impact Summit. The annual Summit is always a happening place where like-minds meet aligned-hearts-and-minds. And this year we enjoyed sharing from a multitude of international change-makers, who are progressive and convicted in their mindsets and impact modus operandi, as well as the deep dives in the afternoon of breakout Roundtable discussions. Our Co-Founder, Hanson Gong, shared the stage alongside two venerable investors Michaela Edwards and Sophie Khau to share their perspectives on ‘How to Invest Boldly in Uncertain Times’. ✏ Here are some key takeaways from Hanson: 💡 1/ Our mindset transformation & time horizon Many of us, either as personal or institutional investors or corporate executives, are used to ‘short-termism’ in our capital market cycles. But is this how our environment and climate operates? It is clear that financial paradigms, in which we are trained and know well, limit our thinking - can we ‘flip around’ what we know and understand how we can view our world and operate outside these paradigms? Further, fluctuations are part-and-parcel of financial cycles. We know this well, and see them as ‘noise’. So can we also transform our mindset around what we know and practise? 💡 2/ Getting from our current Point A to B Let’s dare to ask ourselves questions… On the spectrum of investing - on one end where we have philanthropic grants to the other end of market-rate investments - there are investments that fit different parts of the spectrum - If so, why are some ‘good’ investments not attracting market-rate capital? Is it a failure of our capital markets? Is there a way that we can attract more capital in the middle of such an investment spectrum? Can we innovate on grant-giving, for ex. make grants recoverable, or leverage guarantees? This is an innovative mindset and potentially products that can be ‘catalytic’ and transformative for what matters in our world. ✨ Collectively, we should continue to ask ourselves… How can we strive to be both more transformative and aspirational? Previously on Eco-Innovators 🧭 💡 Kai, a visionary fueled by a passion for sustainability, embarks on a life-changing journey guided by the Kilimo Collective Ecosystem. Inspired by mentors and visions of the future, he returns to Grand Central Station determined to make his vision a reality. He discovers like-minded individuals who share his passion and become the foundation of a new #collective. Chapter 14:  Seeds of Promise  🌱🤝 Excitement fuels Kai's return to the community fair. He scans the faces, each one a potential ally in his mission. He zeroes in on the young entrepreneur with the water filtration system, her resourcefulness a beacon of hope. "Kai," he introduces himself. "Your work is incredible! What are your thoughts on collaborating and building these systems for more communities?" Maya, the woman, beams. "That's the dream, Kai! But I am just a bit tangled up in red tape and funding constraints..." Kai paints a picture of the #KilimoEcosystem, a vibrant network of shared goals and collective impact. Maya's eyes gleam. "This changes everything! People solving problems for each other..." Next, Amara, the fiery activist, catches his eye. Kai shares his #vision, a collaborative #ecosystem driven by social and environmental justice.  Amara's skepticism softens. "Collaboration's nice," she admits, "but can nice fix the mess those in power created?" He shares stories from the future, of interconnected movements changing the world. Amara's doubts waver, replaced by a flicker of hope. "Maybe…this might just work." Kai then sets out to find Dr. Samir Patel, the #educator with a warmth that speaks of #wisdom. They discuss the dire need for transformative education, and Kai reveals the Kilimo Collective Ecosystem. "Ambitious, Kai," Dr. Patel acknowledges. "Our education system needs a revolution. Perhaps there's a way to join forces." Three allies: #ResourceManagement, #SocialJustice, and #Education. These sparks of connection energize Kai, filling him with a surge of possibility. The following days erupt with meetings...how can we create a shared vision of this ecosystem? Maya, Amara, Dr. Patel, and others drawn to Kai's vision convene in a borrowed office. Maya proposes a skill-sharing platform, Amara suggests an #advocacy network, and Dr. Patel dreams of problem-solving #curriculums. The holographic #token feels warm against Kai's skin, a tangible reminder of the future he's creating. But Dr. Patel's warning about Anya Petrova lingers – her sleek office and tech-driven approach clash with their #values. Kai clenches his fist. He's not alone. The #KilimoEcosystem has taken root. They face the future armed with unwavering belief in the power of #collaboration.
