💰 Without proper funding, climate action will stall. Climate finance - one of four pillars in our guidelines for effective national climate action plans (NDCs) - is essential for turning ambition into reality. The transition to a clean, resilient economy requires unprecedented financial investment. While the costs of inaction far exceed those of climate action, many countries lack the resources to implement their climate plans. High Ambition NDCs must therefore ensure resources flow where they are needed most and that all financial decisions support rather than undermine climate goals. Worthy interview by Gary Taylor with Hon. Simon Watts who replete with corporate sound bites would benefit from a far more comprehensive and globally aligned scientific understanding of what #NaturebasedSolutions are and how they can apply in the NZ context i.e NbS are far more than '...leveraging the biodiversity opportunities in NZ's conservation estate..(21.19) ' and thinking that 'river banks in place [need to be] reasonable...by creating the right degree of tension...(20.54)'. Oy vey.

The interview is a precursor to next month’s Climate Change and Business Conference, which is being hosted by EDS, the Sustainable Business Council NZ and the Climate Leaders Coalition. It explores the Minister’s intent in relation to several ‘hot topics’ including options for climate change adaptation and mitigation, the draft second Emissions Reduction Plan (currently open for public consultation); and progress on reviewing the 2050 targets. There is a unique opportunity to secure the necessary financing and catalyze action to address the climate crisis, with an emphasis on the needs of the most vulnerable countries. A new goal that addresses these inherent needs can build robust and effective environmental agendas, leading to concrete and sustainable climate action in developing countries.
