From saving lives to securing livelihoods, nations worldwide are rising to the challenge with innovative climate adaptation strategies. India’s extreme heat alerts have saved over 2,000 lives, while Albania’s energy diversification efforts have successfully brought electricity to 66,000 homes. Enhancements to hydrometeorological services in Bangladesh have led to better climate and weather information, significantly reducing crop losses caused by adverse weather. #climateadaptation #climatechangereport #climateresilience https://lnkd.in/gtQqKMXB

#Afghanistan is currently regarded among the ten countries most vulnerable to #climatechange, which is expected to adversely impact its #environment, #economy and population. According to climate change experts, the country’s annual average temperatures are expected to be 1.7–1.9°C higher by the 2050s, which in turn will lead to a scarcity of fresh #water due to the shrinking snow cover and glaciers in the Hindu Kush and Pamir Mountain ranges. The 2024 state of the climate report: Perilous times on planet Earth. Far from comfortable reading but critical to appreciate that the current approach to #climateaction is not serious - both in #scale & #urgency. To maintain the current line is not only irresponsible, but negligent to the people we serve. Despite countless meetings, COPs (28 and counting), and UN declarations, the report notes that we continue to collectively fail on every indicator. "With the increasingly undeniable effects of #climatechange, a dire assessment is an honest assessment... including the disproportionate impact on marginalized communities. Climate-related #extremeweather and #disasters are contributing greatly to human suffering. Increasing heat and rainfall extremes are now far outside the historical climate. The rapid increase in average global temperatures has led to a massive rise in the incidence of heat extremes. This is linked to many adverse human outcomes, including direct #mortality, increased #healthcare costs, mental health issues, and deaths from cardiorespiratory diseases. Climate change has already contributed to billions of people facing extreme heat. Heat-related mortality is rising rapidly... numerous other major climate-related disasters have occurred, including a series of heat waves across Asia that killed more than a thousand people and led to temperatures reaching 50°C in some parts of India. The number of published articles using climate change and #societalcollapse language has been dramatically increasing. Climate change has already displaced millions of people, and has the potential to displace hundreds of millions or even billions more, leading to greater geopolitical instability. By the end of the century, roughly one-third of people worldwide could be outside the human climate niche, facing increased risk of illness and early death, famine, and a host of other adverse outcomes". Even from our own research we are predicting scores of refugee sites are likely to be uninhabitable (#WetBulbIndex ++) within the next 16 years. As extreme heat and weather events are now unavoidable, we need to invest in #adaptation & enhanced #resilience for those groups who are most at risk, including #refugees and #IDPs and just as importantly, their hosts. “…Bangladesh must assess climate-change impacts from a human-vulnerability perspective and take immediate action. The poorest in the country are the most vulnerable as they have no cushion to withstand these adversities,” says authors of a new International Centre for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD) report on the great need for locally led adaptation. #climateaction #climatechange

Africa’s temperature increase is higher than the global average, making it highly vulnerable to climate change. A new report from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) shows that climate change impacts disproportionately burden Africa. Multi-year droughts and extreme floods are ravaging Africa’s economy. Still, investment in climate change early warning systems will help mitigate risks, increase residence, and reduce the loss and damage to lives and livelihoods The “WMO State of the Climate in Africa 2023” report report notes that African countries are losing 2 to 5% of their Gross Domestic Product. Many set aside 9% of their budget to respond to climate extremes. The cost of climate adaptation in sub-Saharan Africa is very high, estimated to be between US$ 30-50 billion annually over the next decade, representing 2-3% of their GDP. Without adequate response measures, up to 118 million people will live in extinct poverty, living on less than US$ 1.90 per day by 2030, and will be exposed to drought, floods, and extremes. #AdaptationStrategy #ClimateChange #ClimateReport #ClimateAdaptation #Africa https://lnkd.in/g-G3TaFN

One of the most vulnerable nations to climate change, faces devastating floods, droughts, and millions are suffering from acute food insecurity and malnutrition. Despite contributing minimally to global carbon emissions, the country is excluded from climate negotiations and funding, denying millions of people essential support. With urgent needs for sustainable agriculture and disaster resilience, the international community must act to help the Afghan people, ensuring aid reaches those who need it most. #ClimateCrisis #Afghanistan #ClimateJustice https://aje.io/ag0th5

🗺️Climate change is a global crisis leading to significant human displacement due to natural disasters, turning many into climate refugees. In 2023, the global average temperature reached record highs 🌡 , causing floods, droughts, and other extreme events. According to the UN, a 45% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions is needed to avoid catastrophic warming. In 2022, 32.6 million people were displaced by climate-related disasters, with Pakistan, India, Africa, and China among the hardest-hit regions. 🥇 ACNUR, Agência da ONU para Refugiados works to protect displaced individuals, but global action is crucial to address this crisis and safeguard our planet for future generations . 🗒 We invite you to read the full article written by our Innovation Web Writer Maria Luz Acedo at: https://lnkd.in/d7yk2ziB available in english, italian and spanish. #ClimateCrisis #ClimateRefugees #GlobalWarming #ExtremeWeather #UNHCR #Displacement #ClimateAction #ProtectOurPlanet #ClimateEmergency #ClimateDisasters #GlobalResponse #ActOnClimate #Thegreensideofpink

Water scarcity is a reality our team reflected on during National Water Week in March this year. Working on ways to implement water provision and conservation projects is the only way to meet the challenge of access to clean water and manage the intensifying conflict arising in communities over the lack thereof. Thanks to our partners this work has meant we have been able to: - Provide over 3 million litres of safe water drinking water to communities. - Save over 39 million litres of water by repairing and replacing old infrastructure in affected communities. - Educate people about water scarcity and conservation and how to manage this in their communities. For the triple-P team this is an ongoing endeavor that requires collective effort and ongoing partnerships if we are going to bring positive change to communities and the country. #NOtodirtywater #WaterCrisis #ongroundchangemakers Vodacom 🎥 https://lnkd.in/dStytXZF

This #EarthDay, we reflect on how imperative it is not only to reduce the causes of climate crises, but also to better protect the people most at risk. 🌍 Global warming affects food and water supplies, causes rising sea levels that decrease livable land, and creates destructive natural disasters. It’s already a factor in displacing millions from their homes worldwide each year, often termed “climate refugees.” Countries around the world need to prepare for this problem to get much worse if trends are not reversed.
