We know planning is one of the biggest issues faced by our members. 📈 Our August Future Trends report revealed that delays in processing planning applications by local authorities have caused project delays, with 19% of respondents reporting projects being abandoned in the last three months, compared with 22% in 2023 and 7% in 2021. 📝 We are raising this issue with the Government, through our response to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government’s consultation on proposed changes to the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF). 🏙️ Our response recommends the Government invests in building up the capacity of local planning authorities, particularly with qualified design expertise, and promotes the use of architects in the design of all buildings and places. Policymakers and organizational leaders should be asking exactly these sorts of questions. It takes a lot more than will to meet the challenges posed by climate change. Skills. Do we have the right skills in the right places? Credentialed professionals working on critical infrastructure whose practice areas critically intersect with climate change should have climate-related competencies as a requirement (not simply an option for continuing education). Policymakers should be looking at this as a licensing issue. Employers should be looking at this as an HR issue. If you're serious about reducing emissions, adapting to climate change and building resilience to extreme events, then you have to build a climate competent workforce. A few people in a small sustainability, resilience or climate change department is simply not enough. Train personnel. Educate leaders. Update job descriptions and hiring qualifications. Build a climate smart and capable organizational culture. Big transformation isn't owned and run by a few people. Let's go!
MP Joyce Murray today asking Sean Fraser about whether Canada's architects, engineers and related fields have the professional capacity to design and maintain climate smart buildings and infrastructure ... AND whether there are any licensing requirements or mandates on those fields. Apologies for the video quality. Footage from the Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Communities in the House of Commons. #climatesmart #actonclimate #climateresilience #sustainability #climatechange #climatechangeprofessionals

Do you work on Part 9 (Residential Buildings) and are interested in sustainability best practices and continued improvement? Are you innovating your construction practice? If so, there is a unique opportunity to join a select group of Part 9 builders as they share their latest progress, experience, and ideas on lowering the embodied carbon of their projects in the NearZero 2 (NZ2 https://nearzero.ca/) program. During this event you will hear from Julie-An, Residential Designer and Project Manager at Lanefab Design/Build, about the lessons learned on two NZ2 projects that have achieved significantly varied Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) results using the BEAM Estimator tool (https://lnkd.in/gkXGVDHw). You will also hear from the City of Vancouver about Part 9 Embodied Carbon policy considerations, learn about the CLF BC Low Carbon Material Sourcing Guide (LCMSG), and engage in discussion with others on specific low carbon material options and design strategies that can help you achieve embodied carbon reductions on your next project! If the event sells out, feel free to add your name to the waitlist. We will reach out if space becomes available, and at the very least can let you know about upcoming meet-ups. Nice summary. The only thing I'd add is "Maintain your existing buildings to prolong their life." Clean to prolong surfaces, paint when needed, clear your gutters to prevent water damage, maintain your roof etc etc etc)
I'm no longer in Nelson but I continue to be it's biggest fan. Check out the work that Alexander Steven Leffelaar is up to as part of the Low Carbon Homes Pilot: https://lnkd.in/gP3DPsZp. They recently published this exquisite series of documents outlining "10 Affordable Ways to Reduce Embodied Carbon in your Designs". The Low Carbon Homes Pilot is also covering the costs to any building design professionals (i.e., energy advisors, building designers, architects, engineers, or building officials) in British Columbia to take Builders for Climate Action's BEAM certification course. Transforming our built environment requires a new approach to designing and constructing buildings. We urge the next government to establish whole life carbon targets for buildings, focus on retrofitting our existing housing stock through a National Retrofit Strategy, and require Post Occupancy Evaluation for publicly funded projects. Collaboration between architects and the rest of the built environment sector is vital to share knowledge and achieve our objectives. ➡️ Read our priorities for the next government in our manifesto: https://ow.ly/5XSP50SjTkU

Architects and Developers, did you know that your choice of glazing can significantly impact a building's energy efficiency? According to recent studies, windows are the largest contributor to both heat gain and heat loss in buildings. By selecting the right fenestration options, you could slash peak energy usage by as much as 60%! This crucial decision not only enhances sustainability but also reduces operational costs over the building's lifespan. Explore the full article to delve into the science behind these findings and discover this kind of reduction would mean for your current project viability and long term operational costs.🌱💡
