I’ve always believed that our greatest lessons often come from the most unexpected places. My journey through different roles and cultures has been a testament to this. From my early days as a field worker for Scripture Union to my current role at Tarsus On Demand, I’ve witnessed firsthand the transformative power of diverse workplace experiences and embracing diversity within the workplace. Cultural diversity isn’t just about inclusivity so that that box is ticked; it’s about intentionally embracing what makes us different. It goes beyond acceptance, into the realm of practice and implementation, oftentimes uncomfortable and dare I say costly. Yes, many would posit that it is important in the workplace because it fosters innovation and growth since bringing people together, from different backgrounds, opens doors to new perspectives, ideas, and solutions. While diversity fuels creativity and drives businesses forward, practicing it is much more fundamental. It shifts to treating the other, different as they are, as an equal. It challenges our known comfort zones to widen and deepen, our language and practices to shift from a position of superiority to one of equity. In my experience, truly embracing diversity makes the one (person or juristic) a better person. Throughout my career, as eclectic as it has been, I do my best to prioritise creating an environment where every voice is not only heard, every background valued but equally respected and considered. By celebrating our differences, we cultivate a culture of respect and excellence, paving the way for sustained success.
