Here is a Friday tip for small business owners interested in government contracting. If your firm wants to gain a competitive edge, consider performing a public records request before submitting your responsive and responsible solution. The Public Records Act permits the public, including contractors and vendors, the ability to request public information from a government agency (with the exception of certain exemptions). A vendor or contractor can inspect, copy and/or examine submitted records on an awarded contractor to determine a baseline for their pricing strategy. There maybe a fee required to obtain some public records. If you're a small construction company, you can secure project work with public institutions without the hassle and cost of a competitive bid process or bonding requirements. Most public-funded institutions—such as cities, schools, municipalities, and nonprofits—have a policy that sets a dollar-amount threshold for construction projects. If a project falls below that threshold, there's no need for a competitive bid or bonding. For example, in our imaginary City of Unicorn 🦄, a policy might state: "For projects valued at $40,000 or greater, the City requires at least three (3) quotes from qualified bidders." So, for projects valued under $40,000, no competitive bid is necessary! Takeaway for Small Contractors: 1️⃣ If you’re targeting projects under $50,000, reach out to local public institutions and ask about their bidding policy requirements. 2️⃣ Inquire how you can get on their "Preferred Vendor" list for work that falls beneath the competitive bid threshold. Opportunities are out there—go after them! #FreedomConstructon #ConstructionTips #SmallBusinessSupport #PublicProjects #CommercialConstruction
