Here are a few snippets of my work from the nearly three years I've spent in TV news. I need a fresh perspective on my Reporter Reel. Your feedback would be greatly appreciated! What do you think? What should stay, and what should go? Which parts captivated you? Which parts fell flat? I'll be sharing my Feature Reel in a few days! https://lnkd.in/gS2c_3Y6

How exactly do you land a news story? A story about your organization’s history, programs, and future goals is unlikely to get picked up by a newspaper, TV station, or digital publication. It’s just too broad. You need something interesting to share. Look at your organization’s work as if you’re a reporter. What would YOU report on? Here are just a few questions to get you thinking about the kinds of stories you could share.

How Much Attention Have Presidential Year Debates Gotten On TV News Over The Years? Hint: 2012 Was The Recent Peak How much attention do presidential year debates get on television news? The timeline below shows total mentions of "debate" across CNN, MSNBC and Fox News over the past decade and a half, showing 2012 achieved peak attention. Debates have been steadily receiving less attention each year, with CNN a notable outlier this year. The build-up over the months leading up to the debate and how it has differed across each election cycle is fascinating. https://lnkd.in/eF-QbU2c

One of the key pillars of #journalism is to hold truth to power. Why is CBS News not allowing its moderators to fact-check live on air at tonight's Vice Presidential debate between J.D. Vance and Tim Walz? Instead, it says it'll be up to the politicians to call out any "misstatements" although CBS says it will have a live fact-checking blog and social media posts. What are we doing here? The audience is watching the event ... on television! I would argue the viewing audience isn't going to visit the CBS News website or social media channels, splitting their attention from the broadcast. In a live broadcast environment, the moderators must hold the two accountable. Call out any nonsense. Call out the blatant lies. To put the onus on Vance and Walz does a disservice to the viewing public.

It's one of the most disturbing things I can recall watching in a long time and Rachel Cooke, in The New Statesman, sums it up better than I ever could: "I can’t, in any ordinary sense, recommend Yariv Mozer’s 90-minute documentary 'Surviving October 7th: We Will Dance Again'. It will destroy you; sleep was impossible for me afterwards. But it is an astonishing thing, almost beyond description." If we still value and accept it's the role of journalism and the news and factual broadcast media to help us try and make sense of our world, then this is surely something of which we need more. https://lnkd.in/eU9FhZbh

While preparing tonight’s broadcasts and striving to think outside the box, finding unexplored angles… journalism is a profession that doesn’t adhere to working hours or office locations; for a journalist, news is like air, water, and food. #Journalism #Broadcasting #Innovation #News #Media #ThinkOutsideTheBox #BreakingNews #JournalistLife #PassionForNews

In a significant development within late-night television, Fox News host Greg Gutfeld has surpassed Stephen Colbert in viewership ratings, marking a notable shift in the landscape of late-night programming. Gutfeld’s show, “Gutfeld!”, has consistently attracted a growing audience, blending humor with conservative political commentary. This surge in popularity has led to “Gutfeld!” outperforming “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” in total viewership on multiple occasions. This trend underscores a broader shift in audience preferences, with viewers increasingly gravitating towards content that aligns with their political perspectives. Gutfeld’s success reflects a demand for alternative viewpoints in late-night television, challenging the traditional dominance of more liberal-leaning hosts. The competition between “Gutfeld!” and “The Late Show” highlights the evolving dynamics of late-night TV, where diverse voices and formats are reshaping the genre. As the media landscape continues to evolve, the rise of “Gutfeld!” signifies a pivotal moment in late-night television, illustrating the impact of political alignment on audience engagement and the shifting preferences of viewers seeking content that resonates with their viewpoints.

This illustrates the difficulty UK whistle-blowers have in getting heard - especially when facing those protecting a trusted brand - such as the NHS or Post Office. But rebuilding trust will be even harder - especially since it is all too evidence that the "lessons" have not not yet been understood, let alone "learned". Most of the publicity is still for the mendacious brutality of the cover up. We have yet to see analysis of the root causes - including the mindset of England's oldest Crown Agency. It pre-dates the creation of the modern Civil Service, which commonly shares that mindset. Until comparatively recently, it was also the main channel for Government's communications with the public. It still is for that 30 - 40% (and apparently rising not falling) who do not trust on-line communications, even if they have access and can use them.

Fine job by Simon Bucks on tracking down some of the broadcast journalists who worked on the #PostOfficeScandal in the early days. Jane French was a wonderful (and scary) mentor. https://lnkd.in/edaWMA9F
