📣 LAUNCHED TODAY: Our second Salmon Welfare Scorecard evaluates the public policies and reporting of 11 major producers across 13 welfare criteria. These producers - AquaChile, Bakkafrost, Camanchaca SA, Cermaq Global, Cooke Scotland, Grieg Seafood, Lerøy Seafood Group ASA, Mowi, Multi X, SalMar, and Scottish Sea Farms - collectively represent 63% of the global salmon industry. The Scorecard shows positive progress, with 62% of producers improving their policies and reporting on salmon welfare compared to last year. However, there is still significant room for improvement as the industry still falls short on transparent reporting for issues like high stocking densities, high mortality rates, and barren environments. The journey to better salmon welfare continues, and the industry must continue to push for higher standards and greater accountability. Meat often carries one of the highest price tags of a meal, so offering a more responsible option containing a smaller percentage of higher welfare meat alongside higher percentage of plants can help to rebalance the increase in cost for meat with improved welfare. Another option is to offer smaller portion sizes, especially as the government is stating that we are on average consuming too many calories on a regular basis. This will help to keep costs down but also reduce wastage. Having less choice on the menu is also a good solution, for example, instead of having three or four steaks on the menu, use a rump and sirloin or a rump and ribeye, this will help with stock holding costs but at the same time offer variety and value for money. And why not look at cheaper cuts of meat such as bavette and flat iron steak. #reducewaste #menus #lessmeat

Every day in Australia, millions of chickens raised for meat are suffering due to Australia's poor welfare laws and standards. What are the biggest welfare issues for chickens? 💔 The industry breeds genetically selected chickens that grow at extreme rates to unnatural sizes, and their bodies struggle to cope with the weight. 💔 The chickens are packed into sheds at high densities, where they never experience natural light or clean air and have no room to scratch, dust bathe, or perch. 💔 They experience unnecessary fear, pain and suffering during the slaughter due to outdated, inhumane methods. It's time for the industry to make serious changes to the welfare standards of chickens bred for meat. See how you can support Better Chicken Australia in the comments. 🐔 - #animalwelfare #betterchickencommitment #betterchickenaustralia

What do consumers think of the welfare of farm animals? One of the main takeaways of our survey is that if we aim for higher standards, the costs of this transition must be equitably shared across the value chain and not borne by consumers only. Nor should farmers be the ones bearing the brunt. What about imports? Most consumers would like that the EU funds farmers to improve welfare practices and agree that food imports should go by the same rules.
