On 5 December 2024, Civic Exchange released a white paper calling for the development of an innovation-supportive business model specifically for public bus services to adopt zero-emission bus fleets in Hong Kong. The current farebox-dependent franchise model stands in the way of Hong Kong’s transition towards new energy bus fleets, which is crucial for achieving the city’s broader goals for carbon neutrality before 2050. The urgency of this transition is heightened by a lack of funds, alongside the legal mandates that limit the lifespan of diesel buses, as well as the challenges in adapting new energy vehicles to operate effectively in Hong Kong's diverse terrains. White paper recommends that both the government and bus companies engage to refine the current franchise model. It suggests incorporating several key initiatives, including short-term government subsidies, leasing contracts, a bus-plus-property model, a fare adjustment mechanism and carbon credits to create alternative revenue streams. Our sincere gratitude to who supported the publications and guests who attended the launch event. Read Our Research Here︱按此閱讀研究全文:https://lnkd.in/gKtQP-Zu Watch the highlights of the launch event︱按此觀看發布會精華片段:https://lnkd.in/gr-pHtFV Check out our latest Newsletter︱閱讀全文👉 https://bit.ly/3Zx9x5x Subscribe here︱訂閱思匯通訊!👉 https://bit.ly/3wFV5tN In This Newsletter (10 Dec 2024) 1. UK’s bus fleet could reach net zero first The UK’s bus fleet could reach net zero before any other vehicle sector, with figures released by the the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) showing that new registrations of the latest, greenest buses rose by a third (36.3%) to 424 units during Q2 2024. As a result, the UK continues to sit at the very front of the European green bus transition as the largest ZEV bus market by volume in Europe, followed by Italy, Germany and France. Net zero commitments from government have been crucial, including England’s Zero Emission Bus Regional Area funding and the Scottish Zero Emission Bus Challenge Fund – helping almost a quarter (23.2%) of all new vehicle purchases to decarbonise in the first half of 2024. With buses now leading Britain’s road vehicle decarbonisation – helped by a less complex transition than cars, vans and trucks, given buses have depot-based, circular and consistent routes – the bus fleet could reach net zero before any other vehicle sector, according to the SMMT. Argonne National Laboratory and Toyota Motor North America have launched a collaboration focused on battery recycling. This partnership aims to improve the recycling processes for lithium-ion batteries, which are critical for electric vehicles. By enhancing these processes, they hope to create a more sustainable lifecycle for EV batteries, reducing environmental impact and dependency on raw materials. This collaboration emphasises the importance of innovation in recycling technology to support the growing demand for electric vehicles and sustainable energy solutions — check it out. #toyota #fleetmanagement #recycling #batteryrecycling

🚕 🔋 🇨🇳 Interesting story about the first large scale scrapping of electric taxis in China with focus on their batteries. Happy for the opportunity to share my view in the article. Personally I think it's an enormous waste of resources to scrap commercial vehicles after eight years (applies to both EV and ICE) in a country where a lot of people still can't afford a car. I was riding in one of the early e6 taxis in Shenzhen last year, the same model as the taxis now being scrapped in Taiyuan, still on its first battery, and had nothing to complain about. But it makes it easier to organise a circular value chain as batteries can be consolidated and assessed efficiently which is the best way to retain battery value. What's not told in the story is that the assigned battery recycling company, Dinos New Energy Technology, that alongside the dismantling and reporposing company Wuchan Renewable Resources Utilization received the order to process the used batteries, was basically set up in the region six months prior to the first car being scrapped. A move from the province to make sure the jobs remained in the region. It shows that the reuse and recycling capacity which already far exceeds supply in China will continue to grow and that barriers to entry are relatively low. The regional push for jobs, something we see between member countries in the EU 🇪🇺 and states in the US 🇺🇸 , with wide-open portfolios of subsidies, tax credits and favourable loans might be one of the main reasons to why new recycling firms only continue to emerge, despite the limited feedstock of batteries to recycle.

A year ago, a leaked internal document from Toyota highlighted the significant material intensity of battery electric vehicles (BEVs). Until full vehicle recycling becomes the norm, can we be certain BEVs are environmentally friendly? Tribeca Asia Infrastructure Fund believes public transport and related infrastructure can more immediately contribute to environmental sustainability. So the question is not which car to own, but how soon we can go car-free. #Infrastructure #EV #Asia #Battery #Tribeca #Investment #EnergyTransition

In addition to car recycling, car battery recycling is also becoming increasingly important in the Netherlands. Last year, a useful application rate of 63.6% was achieved for discarded drive batteries from electric cars. This is well above the recycling obligation of 50% of the weight of lithium-ion batteries. More facts, figures, and insights about car and car battery recycling can be found in our 2023 sustainability report, "Over Thirty Years of Development and Refinement." https://lnkd.in/epaj9HmB ARN, Janet Kes, Martijn Boelhouwer #car #battery #recycling

A recent article by Circular Online is about another potentially fruitful partnership on the market, between Nissan Motor Corporation and Ecobat 🔋 💪 Two companies will investigate ways to use EV batteries from Nissan LEAFs and whether they could be recovered, repaired, recycled or repurposed. Another aim of the partnership is to investigate ways of commercializing the process of locating, safely transporting, dismantling, repairing and repurposing EV batteries for second-life usage, the same as what Recirculate is working on. We are happy more and more big brands are joining efforts and working together to unleash the potential of batteries’ second life.
