The company is sharing the experiences from the test field opened in July in an international cluster with over 40 partners. It's not just about technology - the port of Hamburg is set to play a central role in hydrogen import and transport in the future. In an interview, project manager Karin Debacher explains how the transition to green port logistics can be successful and what hurdles still need to be overcome. H₂News: Ms. Debacher, what does HHLA actually do? Karin Debacher: We are a European logistics company and are active in various business areas along the entire transport chain. In Hamburg, we are primarily known for handling goods at the port, especially containers. Our second important pillar is container transport from seaports to the hinterland by rail. In Europe, we operate a broad network of seaport and intermodal terminals through a subsidiary, which we connect by road and rail. H₂News: And what is your role at HHLA? Debacher: I lead the hydrogen projects at HHLA. This covers two areas: Firstly, the decarbonization of our own operations - we want to be climate-neutral by 2040, and hydrogen should play an important role in this. That is why we also put our hydrogen test field into operation at one of our container terminals in Hamburg in the middle of the year. Secondly, we are investigating how hydrogen can be imported and transported efficiently. H₂News: Is there a preference as to where hydrogen is produced - in Germany, Europe or elsewhere? Debacher: We are unbiased in this regard; our primary concern is economic feasibility. We observe that production outside Germany can be significantly cheaper, so that transport costs are still economically justifiable. The decisive factor will ultimately be the price. H₂News: Would it be conceivable for you to produce your own hydrogen on the port site? Debacher: That doesn't make sense. Space in the port is rare and competitive - so we simply don't have the space to start producing hydrogen. For this reason, we are also investigating with the Clean Port & Logistics Cluster how a permanent H₂ supply can be ensured for H₂ applications in port logistics. 24/7 operation is very important for us, and it would be fatal if the systems had to shut down because there is no hydrogen available.

These innovative trucks will use green hydrogen and are a crucial part of Volvo's goal to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions and support our customers' sustainability objectives. Customer tests will begin in 2026, followed by series production. These new hydrogen trucks are especially suitable for long distances and provide a solution in areas where charging infrastructure for electric trucks is limited. Jan Hjelmgren, Head of Product Management and Quality at Volvo Trucks, says: "Trucks running on green hydrogen offer the same performance and reliability as our diesel trucks, but with the potential for net-zero CO2 emissions. They are a valuable addition to our existing battery-electric trucks." Volvo's hydrogen combustion engines will utilize High-Pressure Direct Injection (HPDI) technology, ensuring higher energy efficiency, lower fuel consumption, and greater engine power and torque. These trucks will be classified as ‘Zero Emission Vehicles’ (ZEV) under the new EU CO2 emission standards. Volvo Group has also signed a joint venture agreement with Westport Fuel Systems to further develop HPDI technology. The joint venture is expected to become operational in the second quarter of 2024. Westport Fuel Systems is one of the consortium partners in the Green Transport Delta Hydrogen Project. By leveraging cross-sector and innovative hydrogen value chains, the consortium aims to significantly enhance and maintain the Netherlands' competitive position in the hydrogen sector. The envisioned technologies (hydrogen combustion engines, hydrogen fuel cells, and hydrogen refueling infrastructure) will greatly contribute to the sustainability of the mobility sector. This consortium also strengthens the research and innovation ecosystem in the Netherlands, evidenced by the collaboration between large enterprises, SMEs, and knowledge institutions. Building a strong competitive position enables consortium partners to keep the production of these technologies within the Netherlands long-term, reducing dependency on foreign suppliers.
