This would give clear and irrevocable power to local government and communities, enshrining the principles of localism in law. It would give local government in England a measure of constitutional protection that is common in other democracies.

“What is happening at TikTok is, it is creating the biggest antisemitic movement since the Nazis. Shame on you. If you think back to Oct. 7, the reason why Hamas were able to behead young people & rape women was they were fed images from when they were small kids that led them to hate.” Sacha Baron Cohen: November 20th 2023 “We recognise this is an incredibly difficult & fearful time for millions of people around the world & in our community. Our leadership has been meeting with creators, civil society, human rights experts & stakeholders to listen to their experiences and feedback on how TikTok can remain a place for community, discovery and sharing authentically.” TikTok: November 21st 2023 Since that statement by TikTok, Jewish members of staff at the social media company have given evidence of freely expressed antisemitic & anti-Israel views on Lark, their internal chat system, & noted that the company’s 40,000 moderators have allowed anti-Israel & antisemitic misinformation to run rampant on the platform. FOX Business has reported that TikTok moderators have openly promoted the anti-Israel BDS movement within the company, celebrated Hamas’s onslaught & used the watermelon emoji, which has the colors of the Palestinian flag, as their profile picture. According to a study conducted by Generation Lab of 18 to 29yr olds, data suggests TikTok is a meaningful driver of the current surge in antisemitism. The survey finds that spending 30 minutes a day on TikTok increases the chances somebody holds anti-Semitic views by 17%. For every video view with a pro-Israel hashtag in the US, there are 54 views with pro-Palestinian hashtags. Given TikTok’s scale, it’s not surprising that this imbalance of spread corresponds to an increase in antisemitism. So, as we ask ourselves the questions of both why we are experiencing such unprecedented levels of anti-Jewish racism & how we address this blight on our society, in particular with regards to the younger generation, let’s think carefully about the undue influence certain platforms have on our children. They must do better, they must do more & we shouldn’t be afraid to demand immediate action.
