Our purpose as a local government is to “support our communities to thrive by providing inclusive and sustainable services, which reflect their aspirations”. Pride month in November was an opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to inclusion, by celebrating the presence and contributions of our LGBQTIA+ community and staff with a series of activities held across the City. 🌈 Rainbow-themed dress-ups at Cockburn ARC exercise fitness classes 📚 Conversations about poetry, empathy and inclusion at Cockburn Libraries with queer non-binary poet Scott-Patrick Mitchell 👻 Cockburn Youth Centre’s popular annual Pride & Progress Ball, with more than 200 guests attending ✨ Staff education sessions hosted by our Noonookatiny Committee (Diversity Committee) and led by Curtin University's equity, diversity and belonging senior advisor Sheldon Smith. Roughly 11 per cent of Australians identify as LGBTQIA+ and with more than 1,000 staff at the City of Cockburn, we can anticipate there are more than 110 staff working with us who identify within the community. We discovered from a recent diversity and inclusion staff survey that diversity and inclusion was extremely important to 85 per cent of staff. Delivering a range of initiatives that promote education and foster deeper inclusion to support the psychological safety of our colleagues ensures that Cockburn is the best place to be, both for staff and the broader community.
Room for everyone 🧡
