Last week, with Cyprian Szyszka from the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI) I completed yet another training for an #EuropeanWorksCouncil at a German manufacturing company. This fact alone would be no reason to post here, BUT: 1. no (good) training is just a repetitive, regular job & 2. I want to share some impressions that may encourage other EWCs to seek and demand their right to training: 1. this #EWC took up their right to training after many years without any such education, although they are entitled to it on the basis of the law and their agreement. --> Don't make the same mistake, read your agreement & ask for/insist on training as often as possible. 2. the EWC was surprised how much they were able to learn within 3 days of training. We talked to them about the law, the context, various industrial relations systems, their rights and their agreement. It was a dialogue - very interactive, with many practical questions and exercises. According to the participants it was an eye opener, honestly. --> use your right to training to learn about what you can do/achieve as an EWC. 3. The EWC has a mix of experienced and new members on board. Both benefited vastly from the training and they are up to the same speed. --> use such training to kick start your EWC after elections for a new term of office and/or in case of high rotation of your members. 4. Training is more than education - it's also team building. We saw this EWC fully transform from a bunch of strangers into a team eager to work together, with new ideas and hunger to achieve something. It's empowering for them and an inspiration for me as a trainer to see an EWC grow so much within such a short period of time. Truly motivating. --> use training as team building and evolve your EWC. So, go for it, don't wait. Check your EWC agreement, contact your Select Committee and insist that you get your EWC training scheduled for 2025. There is so much to learn and knowledge is power.
