This simple yet profound saying reminds us that identity is not formed in isolation. Who we are is deeply intertwined with the people, culture, and values that surround us. But here’s a challenge: what happens when the environment is disconnected from its roots? When our history, land, and sense of self are fractured? For many black South Africans, the legacy of colonialism and apartheid didn’t just steal our land—it disconnected us from our essence, our botho. Today, we exist in environments that often prioritize survival over thriving, conformity over questioning, and external validation over inner purpose.
