🌍 In the intricate tapestry of modern democracy, how can we weave the timeless wisdom of the Gita into our daily lives? Let's reflect on how its teachings guide our behavior as responsible citizens. 🔍 "Karmanye vadhikaraste ma phaleshu kadachana" (Chapter 2, Verse 47) - Focus on your duties, not the outcomes. I’m Motho ga a itsiwe e se naga: How Our Environment Shapes Our Identity In Setswana, we say, Motho ga a itsiwe e se naga—a person is not known outside of their environment. This simple yet profound saying reminds us that identity is not formed in isolation. Who we are is deeply intertwined with the people, culture, and values that surround us. But here’s a challenge: what happens when the environment is disconnected from its roots? When our history, land, and sense of self are fractured? For many black South Africans, the legacy of colonialism and apartheid didn’t just steal our land—it disconnected us from our essence, our botho. Today, we exist in environments that often prioritize survival over thriving, conformity over questioning, and external validation over inner purpose. It’s time to ask: What kind of environment are we creating for ourselves and future generations? • Are we cultivating spaces of growth and reflection? • Are we reconnecting with the wisdom of our ancestors while embracing progress? • Are we raising children who are deeply rooted in their botho but bold enough to dream? Awareness is the first step. As individuals, we can’t change the world overnight, but we can start by questioning the environments we inhabit and the ones we help create. Let’s remember: just as the soil determines the strength of a tree, our communities determine the strength of our people. Motho ga a itsiwe e se naga. How are you shaping the environment around you?
