The HHS and USDA are nearing the publication of another round of Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The only question may be whether the new guidelines will be issued before the Biden-Harris administration departs. The 2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee’s Scientific Report has been submitted to the Secretaries of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and is now available online to the public. #USDA #HHS #foodsafety #sqf #cics #dietaryguidelines https://lnkd.in/gpeqPS_Z

Codex is a unique place where the perspectives of all actors in the food system, from farmers and manufacturers to NGOs and industry associations, come together to shape standards that facilitate the trade of safe and quality foods. Access to safe and quality foods for special dietary uses (FSDU) is vital for people around the world with special dietary needs. I was proud to represent the FSDU sector today during a Codex event on facilitating fair practices in the food trade to explain the importance of #CodexStandards for facilitating trade in FSDU and the work we do at ISDI to raise awareness of these standards. Codex is where public health and the latest science and techniques all come together, which is why it is so critical. At ISDI, we look back at a good week at CAC47 in Geneva. There was agreement on a certain set of NRVs-R for persons aged 6 – 36 months (Vitamins A, B6, D and E, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, calcium, copper, iodine, potassium, zinc and protein). More nutrients to be set! Work has been finalised on: 👉 Provisions relevant to allergen labelling 👉 Guidelines on the provision of food information for prepackaged foods to be offered via e-commerce 👉 Guidelines on the use of technology to provide food information in food labelling ISDI will contribute to new work: 👉 new standard for foods for older infants and young children can start 👉 new guidelines on labelling in emergencies #FAOWHOCodex #CodexCAC47 #CodexAlimentarius #FSDU #SpecialisedNutritio

I am delighted to share a recent publication in which I had the honour of being a co-author the publication was led by Delia Atzori and Ben Sonneveld. The paper is titled "Nutrition Fragility in Isolation: Food Insecurity in Small Island Developing States" and published in Springer's Food Security journal, boasting an impressive Impact Factor of 6.7 (2022). The study delves into the unique challenges faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS), addressing issues like reliance on food imports, unbalanced diets, and limited resources. Our approach includes standardized methodology, utilizing the latest FAO data, and presenting results with user-friendly geo-visualization and infographics. Key findings emphasize the critical need for policy interventions, revealing that 94% of SIDS don't meet food group requirements. None meet micronutrient doses, highlighting gaps in dietary diversity. This cost-efficient approach, based on existing databases, calls for improvements in international databases' timeliness and coverage for SIDS. https://lnkd.in/gWzEhS_W

Amazing that we still do not have a clear definition for what constitutes financing for food and nutrition security. Depending on the definition used, estimates of global overseas development assistance range from 13.9 billion to 62.6 billion, a difference of almost 40 billion! A common definition is needed to better track how much is being spent. Congratulations to Luke Williams (University of Queensland) for having their abstract ‘Developing traditionally used foods for modern markets: successfully performing the dietary risk assessment of a native grain’ selected for the upcoming ASM, Sydney 3-6 Dec. Here’s what you can look forward to in Luke’s presentation: 🔹Global interest in Australian native foods is growing. However, dietary safety evidence is lacking, and concerns have been raised by food regulators. 🔹A native grain with a long history of traditional use has been shown to be highly nutritious. We now show that the native grain species poses no dietary safety concerns. 🔹The learnings from this project can direct the future dietary safety assessment of traditional foods and therefore facilitate the safe market access of a broader range of traditionally used foods. If you’d like to hear more from Luke and other NSA Members, register for the upcoming ASM now! ➡️https://ow.ly/ET4Q50U6zTE #NSAus2024 #nutritionsociety#nutritionscience
