Have you got a school starter this year? Even if your kid is just heading back to school I'm sure you want some great pics so I thought I'd share three top tips for the best photos possible for the first day of school this week. Here's tip #1... Give yourself plenty of time on the first day of school. It’s going to be a big day! Either it’s your little one’s first day of school ever (and you’ve got the high emotion of getting them to school and keeping it together!) or you’re trying to get kids back into school mornings after weeks of summer routine. You don’t want to be flustered so give yourself adequate time. If you think (or know) that mornings are going to be frantic then consider taking your back-to-school photos a day or two before the start of term. It’s to commemorate how they look at the beginning of the school year, right, not necessarily a requirement for that specific day? These were taken a few days before the first day of school to keep things chilled (and have a practice of putting on uniform!) Check back on Wednesday and Friday for the other two. P.S. Grantee Highlight: High School Residency, a digital photography program by NYC SALT, uplifts students of historically marginalized backgrounds by investing in their creativity. Participants embrace their artistry while building relationships and gaining invaluable professional experience. The Chelsea program includes two exhibitions where students display and present their work, fostering much-needed skills in public speaking, socialization, and confidence in a post-pandemic world. As one of our grantees, each participant was able to receive individualized attention during the college application process. As a result, 100% of the senior class received acceptance letters! Every rising senior is a first generation college student. One participant reflected, “Growing up I did not think I would go to college. My excuse was financial, but deeper than that, it was the fear of allowing myself to want bigger things. No one I knew had successfully completed college… Salt changed that. They were the first to see my creativity as more than a doodle on a page but as the beginnings of a future. Salt helped me realize that doing something creative could be turned into a job. I met all kinds of people in creative jobs, and through getting to know these people, I came to realize that creativity and money were not mutually exclusive. Informative, quick read. Capturing the best you is the most important thing.

The best movie you’ve never seen: Joe Versus the Volcano 🌋 It’s a goofy, corny romcom from the 90s with a young Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. But what sets it apart is the subtle depth it has in capturing what it’s like to be a young adult finding your way. Sometimes it feels like every aspect of your life is going off the rails, or you’re just missing the mark overall. That’s normal. In your early to mid 20s, you’re going to have health issues, difficult career choices, financial burdens, failed relationships, trouble with family, and the list goes on. BUT, this time really is what you make of it. Yeah, sometimes things suck, but there are also some of your best friendships yet, new skills and hobbies that you discover, new places and new people that you meet, restoration of relationships with friends and family, and some of your greatest adventures yet. I say all this because you really don’t see this period of your mid-twenties explored in storytelling outside of the highs of it. And they’re there, but Joe Versus the Volcano does a great job of exploring the full range of what that time is like (even if Joe’s supposed to be a bit older)! So, if you’re in your mid-twenties and just need to let your hair down, go watch Joe Versus the Volcano! P.S.
