Just a friendly reminder that being 'not racist' isn't really a thing. Being 'anti-racist' is. Here's why: We all have internalised biases through years of social conditioning and media influence. And it's important to recognise these and work to undo them. If you consider yourself 'not racist', realistically you are in denial. Really you can only be one of two things - pro-racism, or anti-racism. You either support the continuation of systems, structures, norms and prejudices that are inherently racist, which many (or even most) of our systems are. Or you believe that these need to be actively changed so racial discrimination is eliminated. By simply declaring yourself 'not racist' and moving on, you are by default agreeing to the status quo, a status quo which IS racist. So this year, on the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, consider where you sit. And if you agree that racism needs to be addressed and reversed, then you are an anti-racist. Go out and notice where racial discrimination shows up, speak up about it, have difficult conversations with those who don't see it (or even oversee it!), consider what influence you might have over making changes. And drop questions or clarifications in the comments - I'm happy to answer, and I'm happy to learn. #antiracism #socialjustice #endracialdiscrimination #inclusion #diversity #dei #justiceforall #leadership
