Leadership Check-In: How Effective Are You Under Stress? Stress is inevitable. But how we manage it can significantly impact our effectiveness. Research consistently shows a strong correlation between stress management and leadership performance. High stress levels can impair decision-making, reduce creativity, and hinder communication—critical attributes of effective leadership. Conversely, leaders who manage stress tend to make better decisions, maintain clarity, and inspire their teams. 📝 Checklist: Are You an Effective Leader Under Stress? What Effective Looks Like: ✅ Turns outward, engages people, and leverages company resources, team members, and external advisors.  ✅ Communicates across multiple channels, increasing the intensity of communication as context decreases. Keeps people informed so that everyone can follow along.  ✅ Makes decisions based on available information, confidently stepping into decision-making and moving things forward.  ✅ Absorbs stress without 'freaking out or shutting down,' allowing those around them to perform at their highest level. What Ineffective Looks Like: ❌ Turns inward, isolating themselves and often micromanaging non-critical aspects, taking tasks away from the team.  ❌ Fails to communicate effectively or provide context, creating information asymmetries and additional stress for the team.  ❌ Displays two types of ineffective decision-making: either frozen and indecisive, or making quick but erratic and low-judgment decisions.  ❌ Amplifies the stress situation, making it worse for everyone instead of providing a calming presence. As a leader, it is essential to regularly evaluate your performance, especially in challenging situations. How do you measure up against these indicators?
