Don’t be crippled by imaginary best practices, especially if you are still learning. First just learn, then refine. You aren’t going to be get arrested for making a spiderweb chart. But I come from engineering. We keep our visualizations extremely simple, to just identify the problem. We aren’t looking to impress. We are looking to fix or make better. There is a balance somewhere between a bland engineering chart that is very useful and a worthless clustering visualization that just looks neat.

The main purpose of visualization is not to make different fancy visuals. Its purpose is to get more information through simple and concise visuals which help the stakeholder to understand the flow of data.

It’s harder to tell a story in clear and simple language. And sometimes doing it simple is the skill, do the work outside the visual to keep it simple. Think about what people need to know, and how the visual shows that.

I want to make every table a highlight table/heat map. But not every table needs to be a highlight table. 🙃

Indeed Christian Wanser. The line between good-looking and dysfunctional is quite thin when it comes to data visualization

Christian Wanser, the more time we spend making a visual easy to understand, the more useful+digestible information it actually contains.

Minimalistic design with apt colors is the new cool dataviz thing! I would say this is much harder than going for bold designs and bespoke charts. Although both have their own places and I love them both 😊

Christian Wanser Happens to the best of us! You can always create a visual but choose not to use it.
