The French anticipated elections provided a triple danger from a European point of view ✅hostile government ✅irresponsible government ✅unstable government ✅Hostile government was refused by the French in the second round of voting, but irresponsible government and unstable government are still very much in the cards. ✅Irresponsible government With public debt exceeding 110% of gdp and a current deficit of more than 5%, implementing the program of the left leads directly into state bankruptcy, mass poverty and political instability ✅Unstable government If the moderate parties of the Center right and the Center left are unable to come together and compromise there can be no stable government and we will soon be back to danger Nr. 1 Please read my article attached in Le Grand Continent on the art of compromise and the future of France!

"Emmanuel Macron will push for the traditional majority, EPP, S&D and Renew. It is still justified by the figures we see in our forecasts," says Francesco Sismondini from the Euronews Polls Centre. Ultra-conservatives are trying to avoid this outcome by reestablishing good relations with each other, as seen in Madrid's far-right Vox conference last week. "Leaders of both ECR and far right groups like Giorgia Meloni and Marine Le Pen can try to find common ground," explains Sismondini. "And in order to reach it they must take some difficult decisions, like breaking with the AfD for Marine Le Pen and becoming moderate on issues such as migration, social questions and supporting Ukraine." But the playing field is still wide open. It's not only a matter of voting figures - politics still needs to have its say, says. Sismondini: "As soon as the negotiations start after the elections, we will see that the political groups at the EU parliament are not that attached [to each other]".

Four days that will shake France and, just maybe, beyond. French President Emmanuel Macron's reckless decision to dissolve Parliament, calling for snap elections in three weeks time, came one hour after the polls closed last Sunday in the election of members of the European Parliament, elections which, in France, the extreme right dominated with a historic, jaw-dropping 37%. In response, leaders of France's four main parties on the left came together Sunday evening and, despite their differences, stayed together for four days until they could announce, Thursday, a new alliance forged in record time: the New Popular Front (an explicit reference to the heroic if short-lived Front Populaire of 1936 formed to head off fascism). To understand this feat it is important to note that the new phoenix-like coalition arises from the ashes of a recent all-left alliance formed between the two rounds of the 2022 presidential elections, NUPES, in response to the decline and near death of the Socialist Party due to years of timorous, centrist immobilism that left most of its traditional constituencies feeling abandoned. This previous coalition (put together in 13 days) was relatively successful, forming the largest opposition caucus in the National Assembly, but frustrations with Macron's imperial presidency led to domestic quarrels and some of the parties decided to go alone into the fray of the European parliamentary elections. Quarrelsomeness turned to vitriol and pot-shots under the pressures of the unstoppable rise of the extreme right, fueled largely by gains made on rank-and-file territory that used to be hallowed ground for the left when it still looked like the left. No one wins a blame-game, but to their credit the parties on the French left took a clear-eyed look at the results Sunday night, their vision sharpened by the very real prospect of a neo-fascist government in France in three weeks time, and did the right thing. Coming soon, an inaugural post on my substack page, adding more detail to these exciting times in France. In the meantime, here's a post commenting on a couple of aspects of this historic event https://lnkd.in/erdAWj6u (in French, but machine translation seems to render a recognizable version in English.)

👏Moldovans have narrowly chosen “yes” in a referendum to position the country closer to membership in the European Union (EU), despite allegations of Russian meddling. The “yes” vote was slightly ahead at 50.4%, while the “no” camp stood at 49.6%. 📃I was happy to share a few thoughts on this outcome for La Libre and Valentin Dauchot. Link attached! ➡While it is still difficult to assess whether this tight result stems from a lack of conviction among voters, the effectiveness of Russian interference, or mixed feelings towards Maia Sandu’s presidency (a pro-European candidate), this close result—achieved thanks to the diaspora’s support for the ‘yes’ vote—came as a surprise. ✊As EU enlargement policy requires a clear roadmap for the upcoming years, I caution that this result could potentially discourage some European capitals from moving ahead more quickly in welcoming new members. 💶Although the EU Commission has already adopted an important €1.8 billion package to support Moldova in the medium term, the new EU institutional leadership will need to continue supporting civil society and sharing best practices to counter malign influence. 🔔The second round of the presidential election will take place on November 3… Stay tuned!

🎉The French are still very attached to the EU, according to the third wave of the survey on the European elections carried out by Ipsos for Le Monde, CEVIPOF, the Fondation Jean-Jaurès and the Institut Montaigne. ✅ 73% of the French said they were in favour of the European project. Could this be partly explained by the bond of trust that exists between European partners? For example, according to a recent ARD poll, 78% of Germans think they can trust France. 🤔 This attachement to the European project needs to be qualified, however, as a majority of French people (54%) disagree with the way in which the European project is being implemented today. 📢 While the debate between anti-Europeans and pro-Europeans no longer seems topical, the French perceive the importance of the EU in responding to challenges and crises, but they remain rather pessimistic about its ability to overcome them effectively. 🚄 Another interesting point is that French people who visit other European countries very often are more likely to support the project (82%) than those who have never travelled (56%). ☀️ If you have had the chance, have these trips changed your view of the European project? We would love to hear about your experience! 👇 #EU #elections #survey #europeanproject #trust #EUpartners
