Biometric tech comes with BIG benefits and also BIG questions about privacy. In the latest for InformationWeek, Aware CTO Dr. Mohamed Lazzouni shares his insights on safeguarding biometric information and preserving consumers' privacy... "Given the complexity of the regulatory landscape and the potential misuse of biometric information, how can enterprises leveraging biometric technology keep that data safe and preserve their consumers’ privacy? "Lazzouni points to strategies like data obfuscation and data anonymization as important techniques to protect consumers. Data obfuscation disguises sensitive information, in this case biometrics, through tactics like encryption and masking. Data anonymization removes personally identifiable information (PII). “You literally strip out the PII from the biometric of origin,” says Lazzouni. “For somebody to really put something back together, they need to know what the original PII is.” Check out the full article for more: https://lnkd.in/eA_Gj_Py #Biometrics #Privacy #Data #AI #Deepfakes

Concern rise of biometrics infringes on privacy Rightfully so. Especially as it is often being used by people who believe it to be not just infallible, but capable of modern day phrenology like capabilities to determine peoples mental and physical health, their feelings, their intent, whether they are engaged in what they are doing and more. No biometric data should be collected without informed consent. Informed consent isn't "if you walk in public you've given us permission to capture your data" #Biometric data collection must be by choice only with clear options to not use them. #privacy not #fear #ethics not #surveillance #rights https://lnkd.in/eQxRMi8d

An update on #MS #Recall (searchable screen grabs taken every 5 seconds) - Its release has been delayed and #biometric #authentication required to access the files. You can also customize which sites it "recalls". And the database will be encrypted. Using biometric data is intended to be more secure, however now your biometric data belongs to #MS. This might not seem like that big of a deal, since many use facial recognition or fingerprints to access their phones. There are always trade offs, asking if this is the one you want for yourself is an important question. Also, a bit of food for thought, who has your biometric data, today? #Ethics #Innovation #Technology #ArtificialIntelligence #Data #Privacy

Having #zerotrust for #ai seems pretty logical. I appreciate all of the recent focus on #ethics throughout computing. I hope it sticks. I do want us to be careful about the biometric discussion. Biometrics is critical when dealing with the most sensitive data. If you use Windows, this data has a lot of layers of protection and anonymization built in. Even more protection if you require TPM or use sensors that have built-in key management. Good explanation of how it works at https://lnkd.in/g3gfgAmU Never seen a public review of cybersecurity quite like the one over Recall. We are so accustomed to our on-demand economy that we forget it was not long ago that getting a feature stopped on the way to market was almost impossible. #ResponsibleAi #SecureAi #VerifiableAi #PrivateAi

It's #FollowFriday and time for a shoutout to Frances Zelazny , Co-Founder and CEO of Anonybit, which offers an innovative security solution that is grounded in decentralized biometrics. Frances has been in the biometrics industry for more than 20 years and she shared how blowback over an early facial recognition stunt led to a crackdown on the industry. Frances and her team took that as an opportunity to educate and promote responsible use guidelines. Many of these have been incorporated into the major privacy laws like GDPR and CCPA. Anonybit works by helping companies save biometric data securely, in a decentralized format that makes it harder for hackers to tap into. Frances was a speaker for our March GCxAI learning community discussion on Deepfakes (and what GCs can do to stop them). We talked about some scary scenarios in which deepfakes created by AI are used by bad actors to defraud companies. Frances explained that the technology exists to combat deepfakes; computers can tell what is computer-generated better than humans can. Frances reminded us that, even with excellent training and policies and procedures, humans can sometimes make mistakes in an an emotional moment. That's where technology can pick up the slack. Frances and her team are working at the cutting edge of cyber security, and she's a prolific writer and speaker on this subject. I highly recommend giving her a follow if you want to stay on top of these issues.
