Most leaders fail because they don’t spend enough time with their teams. A good mentor will show you how they did it. A great mentor will walk alongside you and show you what you can do. Oftentimes, the best leaders are walking alongside their team, not in front of them. Make sure you take the time this week to reflect on where you lead from. Follow-up is the final stage of each module in our Leadership programme. Here participants summarise the past period, describe their achievements, praise themselves, recall their failures and note what lessons they have learnt. At the very beginning of the Leadership programme, many found it difficult to reflect and acknowledge their successes, but with each subsequent meeting, participants became more comfortable with this task and more quickly and easily made lists of their achievements. They began to enjoy it and appreciate our safe space, which allows them to be honest with themselves and trust their colleagues. This is such an essential competency for leaders. I have chaired thousands of board meetings in many different countries. Being last to speak is a proactive leadership stance. Being last to speak does not mean "tuning out" or allowing your mind to wander. It is also not about drawing others out so that they can attack your position. Being last to speak is a method for engaging everyone in the meeting. It enables the issues to be unpacked, explored and understood. It secures better decision-making and ownership of the outcome.
