Props to Aleyda Solís and Danny Sullivan for bringing this lengthy, thought-provoking conversation. They cover some challenging areas, particularly the status of brands following the HCU (helpful content updates), which is the most interesting and talked-about right now. I do believe that Danny/search engineers at Google probably do want to take action on the current state of SERPs. That and there are no specific up/down weighting factors just because someone is a "big brand"... BUT, the issue here is down to belief and whether you want to take what has been said as truthful or not. Google - from a Search PoV - has taken a lot of knocks this year and has been seen as misdirecting, misleading, or flat-out lying about certain elements. Some people are inclined NEVER to believe Google; I don't think that's probably all that helpful in the long run. The issue is, for those people who don't want to believe or trust it, can you blame them? Will it likely change significantly soon? Probably not.

Google vs. Perplexity responses on fact-based questions - seems like two main advantages to how Perplexity handles things: 1. More accurate results in cases I tested --> Google surfaces incorrect info on this simple summarization task for a camera's megapixels 2. Citing sources --> Perplexity lets me more easily know the result is correct by citing sources I can easily tap to verify These two elements are a big deal. I've started using Perplexity on as daily active user -- and replaced some (but not all) search activity that would have been on Google.

Why Is Google Acting As The Arbiter Of Information Helpfulness Online? Why Is Google Acting As The Arbiter Of Information Helpfulness Online? In the ever-evolving digital landscape, Google has become more than just a search engine—it's the gatekeeper of online information. With its complex algorithms, Google acts as a lighthouse, guiding us through the vast sea of data to find the most relevant and reliable content. But with great power comes great responsibility. As Google shapes our learning, cultural discourse, and even free speech, we must also play a role in critiquing and navigating the digital realm. By challenging ourselves to dig deeper, scrutinizing our sources, and remaining vigilant in our quest for truth, we can ensure that Google's power remains a force for enlightenment and connection, rather than a barrier to diverse voices and democratic discourse.
