Earlier this month marked the end of my journey at Alteryx. A huge THANK YOU to every current and former exec leader, board member, manager, IC, and, of course, the Alteryx founders whom I’ve had the chance to collaborate with on so many mission-critical initiatives. In particular, I’d like to thank Dean for giving me this opportunity and Mark for entrusting me to scale in it. It’s hard to describe what the last almost six years have entailed in a short post. Perhaps this story encapsulates it best: Back in 2018, when I first interviewed with Dean, Alteryx was about a year past IPO and had crossed ~$160M in ARR with enviable growth rates. The core question he posed to me was, “How do we scale to a billion in ARR in under 5 years?” What was supposed to be a 45-minute interview at 5 pm in his office turned into a 2-hour+ whiteboarding session. The conversation wove through many themes, including core vs. adjacent use-cases to pursue, approaches for capturing G2K logos, upsell/cross-sell strategies, pricing and packaging, the right adjacent capability and product line expansions, verticalization, M&A strategy, partnerships, growth vs. efficiency tradeoffs, and, of course, the desktop-to-cloud platform shift. I missed my flight back to SF that evening but left Irvine HQ feeling energized that this challenge was worth taking on. Data and analytics are absolutely core to my DNA, so enabling knowledge workers with sophisticated analytic abilities for better decision-making was a mission I felt genuinely excited about. The almost 6-year journey since that evening has entailed tons of successes and our share of setbacks. Most importantly, we finished 2023 a stone’s throw away from the $1B ARR milestone (having more than 6x’d our ARR in this time) and got there by executing on almost every growth lever we discussed that evening, many of which I was fortunate to lead or oversee. I’m excited to see the continued progress of the company, especially with cloud and GenAI! As I’ve reflected on this journey from my unique vantage point, I’ve tried to distill the most salient business lessons from it into a series of blog posts. These posts are structured as topic-specific deep dives in case study format that hit on a wide set of business themes. Internalizing these lessons has helped me become a better operator and I suspect leaders operating in high-growth environments (particularly in SaaS) will find them valuable. > 2 years ago, some people felt doubts about my application to join Alteryx because I didn't seem to be a 100% fit for the role. 🤔 #DataAnalytics automation wasn't my strongest suit; in fact, I literally had a splitting headache the first day I started #upskilling for my certifications 🤣 🤔 I wasn't from the corporate field, and I certainly didn't come from #Tech. Was I getting used to the speed that the Tech industry moved? This was a sincere question during one of my check-ins with leadership. Truth is, with 13+ years in various public sector wheels + 2 years running my #sidehustle, I've been sprinting a marathon for a while... combine that with the deep, deep fatigue that many parents of young children know all too well. It's been a week since my role + hundreds of inspiring team mates worldwide were made redundant. While our global workforce reduction wasn't too surprising given our recent acquisition by private equity, I realised I still needed the time to unpack, sit with my #reflections and plan my next phase. But most crucially, I'm counting my #blessings. Grateful for this unlocked time; grateful for a fruitful phase in Alteryx. Recalling some highlights of my journey ... 🚀 Running countless of hours of Alteryx Escape Rooms for 100s of participants from India, Malaysia and Singapore. I was probably the only employee globally doing these often "live" AND solo. It was a feat I hadn't expected to pull off, but grateful to have facilitated hours of fun, gamified learning. 🚀 Anchoring guest lectures + Supporting curriculum development + Training for some of the most enthusiastic business and data science lecturers in the region. So grateful for your trust and partnership. 🚀 Hosting numerous events & webinars with Alteryx's many brilliant end-users and ACEs from Australia, Singapore, India, HK, Malaysia and Tokyo. So many of you have helped inspire AlteryxSparkED students in our events -- I couldn't thank you more! 🚀 Receiving support from my lifeline of team mates from all over the world -- Cloud Product, Fulfillment, SparkED, Solution Engineering, SDRs, CSMs, AEs, Partner SEs, Marketing, Facilities, Legal, IT and the list goes on... Some of the most impressive talents in those teams were let go this season -- if only chapters didn't have to end this way.
