Chris Regester’s Post

2024 has been a breakthrough year for CS with the big 3 analyst firms, Gartner, IDC and Forrester, publishing their first CS market reports. IDC's is the most recent report and Planhat is once again a Leader, placed firmly in the top right corner of the quadrant. Why do these reports represent a breakthrough for CS? As a business function matures and becomes more enterprise critical, purchasing decisions shift from business buyers to central buyers. Central buyers traditionally reside in IT and Ops, working closely with Procurement, and these roles represent the primary audiences for analyst reports. That IDC, Gartner and Forrester all published their inaugural CS reports shows that customer management is getting its rightful acknowledgment as a critical function, and dedicated post sales tooling a core part of the modern tech stack. Participating was a new and educational (!) experience for me and our team. Here are a few things we learned that may be helpful if analysts come to your space as well. 1. The submission process is demanding! Analysts go deep into your product and strategy, so it’s critical to have a clear, well-reasoned message. We’re building our customer platform believing that CS is a collective responsibility not just the job of the CSM, and IDC recognised this, grading Planhat's 'Strategies' the strongest in the category. 2. A big challenge for analysts is defining the space they are evaluating, especially in emerging spaces. CS is both emerging and extremely broad, so space definition can vary widely. We noticed that vendors with pre-existing analyst relationships were able to guide the space definition to their areas of strength, which potentially worked in their favour come the report. If analyst reports are, or will be, important to your business you need to be proactive with analysts and help them understand the nuances of the space you work in. For people experienced with these reports this will be obvious but was a good education for our team. Planhat performing well in each report was due to our great product, not because we did anything smart or proactive with analysts! We learned that earlier engagement could have helped us shape the space more effectively. 3. Timing is another challenge for everyone involved. Analysts need to define your space and evaluate your product at a fixed point in time meaning your space is defined and feature set assessed based on what’s already available. This is reasonable, but means that a space can be defined by where it's been rather than where it's going. While you do get to speak about roadmap, focusing on what 'is' rather than what 'will be' means space definition leans towards legacy tools over forward thinkers. There is no perfect solution here, but we were happy to see that of the category Leaders in Gartner's MQ, Planhat was closest to Visionary.... and knowing our roadmap in detail, I can safely say that one is spot on!
