As coaches, "holding space" for athletes isn't just about skills—it's about creating a safe, supportive environment where they can thrive emotionally and mentally. Learn how to hold space can unlock a better version of a player. Action Steps: -Foster Emotional Safety: Creating a space where athletes feel safe to express emotions and reflect on challenges without fear of judgment leads to greater emotional resilience and self-awareness, which are essential for long-term development. -Encourage Athlete Autonomy: Allowing athletes to process their experiences, make mistakes, and reflect on their performance promotes self-confidence and leadership, as they take ownership of their growth both on and off the court. -Build Holistic Development: Holding space focuses on the athlete’s overall well-being—mind, body, and emotions—ensuring that their development is not only skill-based but also grounded in mental toughness, emotional intelligence, and personal growth. Wanna grow? Develop? Improve? A coach can help. Let’s set the scene: you sign up for a personal trainer at the gym. You get an amount of sessions at a certain time. You meet with the trainer at that time and follow their guidance during your workout: you learn the correct form while lifting weights, how to organize your workouts, and your trainer pushes you - you somehow get a few more or higher quality reps when the coach's eye is upon you. Trainers often help you hold yourself to a higher account. At work, coaching is also essential. Work doesn't often come with instructions. (There are certainly not as many YouTube videos on analyzing a market as there are on core routines.) Coaching not only raises performance by modeling what is a best practice, but like a personal trainer, it also encourages you to put in better or more "proverbial" reps. Success at work is dependent on coaching. Sometimes this coaching is organized, but more often than not it is ad hoc. Be a coach at work—and take it seriously. There’s a gap between who an employee is and what they can be. And the coach’s job, whether it’s a manager or mentor, is to get you from the former to the latter. It's about understanding the unique needs, goals, and abilities of each athlete and empowering them to perform at their best, both physically and mentally. Here's how performance coaching can make a difference. Individualized Approach: Every athlete is different, with their own strengths, weaknesses, and aspirations. Performance coaching recognizes this diversity and tailors training programs to suit each athlete's specific needs. Goal Setting and Accountability: Setting clear, achievable goals is essential for progress. Performance coaches work closely with athletes to establish meaningful objectives and develop actionable plans to reach them. Through regular assessments and feedback, athletes stay accountable and motivated, driving continuous improvement. Mental Conditioning: Success in sports is as much about mental toughness as it is about physical prowess. Performance coaching emphasizes mental conditioning techniques, such as visualization, goal setting, and mindfulness, to optimize focus, confidence, and resilience under pressure. Holistic Development: True athletic success extends beyond the field or court. Performance coaching embraces a holistic approach to athlete development, addressing factors such as nutrition, recovery, sleep, and lifestyle habits. The Importance of Leadership and Coaching in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics The Scenario: During the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Simone Biles withdrew from several events to focus on her mental health, shocking the world and leaving the U.S. Women's Gymnastics Team without its star. This tested the team's resilience and the coaches' ability to lead under pressure. Team and Individual Coaching: Despite the setback, coach Cecile Landi guided the team through the crisis by balancing team dynamics and individual needs. Team Coaching: Landi kept the team cohesive and focused on collective goals through group discussions and mutual support. One-on-One Coaching: She addressed each gymnast's individual concerns, providing tailored advice and building their confidence. Empowering Through Questions: Instead of giving direct solutions, Landi empowered her athletes by asking questions like, "What do you think will help you perform your best?" This encouraged them to take ownership of their performances and adapt their strategies. Outcome: Under Landi's leadership, the team won the silver medal in the team competition, with individuals delivering outstanding performances in Biles' absence. Reflection: This story exemplifies that success is a collective effort, but achieving it lies with the leader. In business and athletics, coaching for performance is essential. Leaders must balance team coaching with individual support, actively listen, and ask questions that empower team members to find their own solutions. Key Takeaways for Leaders: Prioritize Coaching: Both team and individual coaching are crucial. Listen Actively: Understand each team member's unique needs. Ask Powerful Questions: Empower team members to find their own solutions. Adapt and Support: Be flexible and supportive, especially in crises. Success belongs to the team, but the leader is responsible for achieving it. Effective coaching is arguably the most important skill a leader can possess. 4o

EMPATHY THE ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND AND SHARE WHAT SOMEONE ELSE IS FEELING WITHOUT JUDGMENT The Sports Leaders of the Greater Philadelphia YMCA participated in the Positive Coaching Alliance: Coaching with Empathy. We learned to seamlessly integrate empathy into everyday coaching by creating strong connections, listening to athletes, and understanding how kids’ experiences impact how they show up to practice. Our PCA Trainer, Devin Jefferson taught us tools and tips to create an empathetic environment for all kids to feel safe, seen, heard, and valued. Empathy isn’t an end goal, it’s a process; incorporate empathy into all facets of coaching, from motivation to behavior management. TERMS COACHES CAN USE WITH ATHLETES · “Take perspective of others.” · “Show compassion” · “Be kind” · “Understand what someone else is feeling.” · “Take care of our team/teammates.” · “How would you feel if that were you?” TIPS TO INCORPORATE EMPATHY · Focus on helping athletes identify & name feelings. · Provide athletes with opportunities to share new strategies and ideas. · Teach athletes how to be good active listeners · Ask athletes to take other's perspectives and reflect on their behavior · Provide opportunities to get to know each other and find commonalities. · Share real life examples of empathy in sport with your athletes. · Remind athletes to show gratitude to the officials and other team. · Show care and concern when athletes get injured · Remove judgment when giving feedback/coaching. · Don’t assume what athletes are feeling, ask them how they feel. · Show gratitude when athletes express their feelings.

Performance coaching conducted in a different setting, away from the usual training environment or competition venue, offers several distinct advantages: Novelty and Fresh Perspective: Training in a different setting can break routine and provide a fresh perspective for both athletes and coaches. This novelty can stimulate creativity, motivation, and renewed focus. Adaptability and Versatility: Athletes learn to adapt to different environments, surfaces, and conditions, enhancing their versatility and resilience. This adaptability can be particularly beneficial for athletes who compete in diverse or unpredictable settings. Challenge and Growth: Training in unfamiliar settings presents new challenges that encourage growth and skill development. Athletes are forced to problem-solve, adjust their strategies, and refine their techniques, leading to greater proficiency and mastery. Distraction Management: Coaching in a different setting allows athletes to practice managing distractions and maintaining focus under varying circumstances. This skill is invaluable for performing well in high-pressure situations and adverse conditions. Team Building and Bonding: Conducting coaching sessions in alternative settings provides opportunities for team building and bonding. Shared experiences in unfamiliar environments foster camaraderie, communication, and mutual support among athletes and coaches. Environmental Exposure: Training in different settings exposes athletes to diverse environmental elements, such as altitude, temperature, terrain, and weather conditions. This exposure can improve adaptation capabilities and resilience to environmental challenges. Psychological Benefits: Training in a different setting can be mentally refreshing and rejuvenating for athletes, reducing burnout and monotony. The change of scenery can boost morale, enthusiasm, and mental well-being, leading to improved performance outcomes. 👉 Get in touch with Peak Venues today for more information! #DestinationLearning #PeakExperiences #StrategicChoices

Traditionally, coaching has been a top-down process where the coach dictates the training, strategy, and tactics. However, in recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the value of athlete input. Athlete-reported feedback (ARF) refers to the insights, observations, and responses provided by athletes regarding their training experiences, physical and mental states, and overall well-being. https://lnkd.in/gaQwGnTQ

Hello #linkedincommunity #linkedinforbusiness People say you should let potential clients know HOW you've helped previous clients rather than telling them the boring stuff like what you're trained in and how great you are because all people want to know is how can you help them. This results focused approach is one I'm trying right now with this post using testimonials from previous clients, professionals in sport. Let me know what you think. 🏆“I’ve tried sports psychologists, and read over 15 self-improvement books, but the biggest lesson I’ve learned from working with Mike is that my biggest asset is myself. My wellbeing is 100% better” - Pro athlete 🏆 🧠 Wow! I’ve never experienced coaching like this before! Mostly in books I’ve read they give you techniques like visualisation, positive self-talk, but in this program I actually get to know who I am and what I stand for: I’ve started to realise what are the things that distract me, and the people who negatively influence me." pro athlete 🧠 🌟 “I expected a better personal performance but nothing this drastic! This is the first time in my 10-plus-year career I’ve scored 20 points and not missed a single shot.” pro athlete 🌟 🤝 "Mike has helped me understand what it takes to get me back on track and being the person I want to be. It is up to me to put it into action, but Mike helped me see what was causing my dysfunction and gave me a map to make it better." - Pro sports coach 🤝 have a great day. you deserve to thrive.
