Good morning everyone, I would like to share a blast from the past: The dramatic [2007] Communication from the European Commission: "The June European Council conclusions stated: "The Council of the European Union discussed the current situation on the dairy market." "The dairy market situation has deteriorated dramatically during the last 12 months. After a price spike in 2007 alongside the high food prices in general,". We know now of course that what ensued was a 3 year investigation packed with scandals of cheaper cheese substitutes [made from vegetable oils, proteins, and additives,] often without clear labelling. These substitutes, produced by companies like KaTech Ingredient Solutions and Cheesepop food group, were designed to capture the taste, texture, and melting properties like the real deal. Cheese analogues were so good because people simply couldn't tell the difference and that was due to one magic ingredient that vegan cheeses today don't have and therefore struggle to replicate the taste and texture: Casein. But if you know me you know where this is going. In recent years there has been an upsurge in companies challenging the dairy industry by creating the casein protein through precision fermentation or through cellular agriculture. TurtleTree (not specifically Casein yet), New Culture, Perfect Day, Formo, Remilk, Imagindairy, and even with molecular agriculture from Pigmentum who have rebranded themselves to Plantopia Bio. (Tal Lutzky and Amir Tiroler) and are using a unique approach by producing casein directly in plants using advanced plant-cell technology https://lnkd.in/e8bdDz_v We are literally this far away 👌 from producing real animal free cheese. hands up if you can't wait for lettuce and oat mozzarella! #cultivated #food #innovation #processedforhealth #technology #cheese

Organic food symbolizes a healthy lifestyle and sustainable production, but its reality lies between a genuine goal and a clever marketing strategy. Producing organic foods today is possible but faces challenges, including stricter regulations, higher costs, and lower yields. Organic farming prohibits synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, GMOs, and artificial additives. Certification requires rigorous audits and a transition period for soil to be deemed “clean.” While the process ensures natural and environmentally friendly practices, it demands more resources and labor, making organic foods more expensive and less accessible. The global organic market is thriving, valued at over $260 billion in 2023, with projections to surpass $400 billion by 2030. Key consumers include the U.S., Europe, and Asia. Despite the premium pricing, organic foods attract health-conscious consumers, driving steady demand. However, limited production capacity and occasional fraud in labeling challenge market trust. For businesses, organic products promise profitability, provided there’s transparency, innovation, and government support. Technologies like vertical farming and eco-friendly pest management can lower costs and boost yields. In conclusion, organic foods are both a reality and a business strategy. Their future depends on balancing consumer expectations with sustainable farming practices and adapting to climate and economic pressures.

Can terpenes be sourced organically? What does comparable-to-organic mean? Organic compliant? We understand the confusion. With more consumers preferring organic products, it’s understandable why manufacturers are on the hunt for organically sourced ingredients. That includes the terpenes used to infuse products with aroma, flavor, and sensorial effects. So, manufacturers can simply purchase terpenes derived from organic sources. Right? Well, it’s complicated. Today, “organic” is a designation achieved through certification to the federal USDA National Organic Program (NOP). In order for a product to be labeled organic, it’s required to “...be produced using agricultural production practices that foster resource cycling, promote ecological balance, maintain and improve soil and water quality, minimize the use of synthetic materials, and conserve biodiversity.” The term “organic” has undergone quite a transformation over the last century. The marketing concept of organic farming was birthed at the beginning of the twentieth century in response to the negative environmental effects of mechanized agriculture (soil erosion, decreased crop varieties, decreased food quality, etc.). Over the next several decades, consumers became more aware of the differences between organic and non-organic produce, but certification varied by state. It wasn’t until the 80s that farmers and consumers began heavily advocating for government regulation, which led Congress to pass the Organic Foods Production Act (OFPA) in 1990. The OFPA's goal was to establish national standards for organic products. However, it took ten years of debate before the National Organic Program (NOP) was created and another two years before any of the regulations went into effect. 📲 Read the full blog below to learn about the History of “Organic” Farming, the OCal Cannabis Certification Program, Sourcing, and What this Means for Terpenes. https://lnkd.in/gpBNX7Rp #AbstraxTech #Terpenes #Organic #Flavor #Aroma #Sensory #Botanicals

ORGANIC FOODS The term “organic” refers to the way agricultural products are grown and processed. Organic foods often have more beneficial nutrients, such as antioxidants, than their conventionally-grown counterparts and people with allergies to foods, chemicals, or preservatives may find their symptoms lessen or go away when they eat only organic foods. Organic produce contains fewer pesticides. Chemicals such as synthetic fungicides, herbicides, and insecticides are widely used in conventional agriculture and residues remain on (and in) the food we eat. Organic food is often fresher because it doesn’t contain preservatives that make it last longer. Organic produce is sometimes (but not always, so watch where it is from) produced on smaller farms nearer to where it is sold. Organic farming tends to be better for the environment. Organic farming practices may reduce pollution, conserve water, reduce soil erosion, increase soil fertility, and use less energy. #snsinstitutions #snsdesinthinkers #designthinking
